Closings and events on the 4th

Philadelphia will celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence 233 years ago with a holiday weekend marked by special events and closings.

Independence National Historical Park will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. today for its new "Seizing Freedom" exhibit, which details Philadelphia's important role in the Underground Railroad. The park, also home to the Liberty Bell, will operate under normal hours all weekend, including tours of Independence Hall.

Tomorrow's portion of the "Sunoco Welcome America!" celebration will include performances by Sheryl Crow, Jeffrey Gaines and the Roots, beginning at 8 p.m., and will conclude with a fireworks extravaganza over the Art Museum.

The "Party on the Parkway" will start at noon on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, with food, games and entertainment for the whole family.

Many of the city's main tourist attractions will be open all weekend. The Philadelphia Zoo, the National Constitution Center and the Please Touch Museum will operate under normal hours today and tomorrow. The Franklin Institute and the Academy of Natural Sciences will be open both days, but will close their exhibits at 5 p.m. tomorrow.

The Daily News will not publish tomorrow.

Most city agencies and offices will be open today, but not tomorrow. Only the courts system will be closed today.

City recreation centers, the Free Library and its branches, district health centers, state stores and most banks will be open today but closed tomorrow.

Trash will be collected and mail delivered today, but most city post offices will close at noon. Mail will not be delivered tomorrow and post offices will be closed.

SEPTA buses, and subway and El trains will follow regular schedules today, but Sunday schedules tomorrow.

Regional rail trains will follow a Saturday schedule today and tomorrow and will include extra late-night trains after the fireworks.

Philadelphia Gas Works' Center City offices are open today, but will be closed tomorrow.

Peco Energy's payment center and business offices, at 23rd and Market streets, are closed today and tomorrow, but emergency services will remain available both days.
