Verizon service goes on the fritz in Phila., Del.

In a high-tech society like ours, basic telephone is something that's easy to take for granted - until it goes on the blink.

Yesterday, phone service was disrupted and frequently spotty for Verizon customers in most of Philadelphia and parts of Delaware, Verizon spokeman Lee Gierczynski said yesterday.

The company first noticed a problem at about 6 a.m., he said.

"We had a number of circuits between some Verizon telecommunications that went down due to a possible equipment failure, " Gierczynski said.

But at 6 last night, Gierczynski, who is based in Pittsburgh, said that technicians were still working to resolve the problems that likely involved telephone switching equipment. The technicians were expected to work through last night to restore service.

"It's intermittent," he said of the problems.

Callers to the Daily News said that they had a hard time making calls to City Hall.

And Officer Jillian Russell, a spokeswoman for the Philadelphia Police Department, said that lines in her public-affairs office were affected, but that the city's emergency 9-1-1 system apparently was not. *
