2 wounded in shootings
Two men were shot and injured in incidents early yesterday. In the first, a 23-year-old man was shot in the leg and in the stomach about 12:15 a.m. on Lesher Street near Bridge, in Frankford. He was listed in critical condition at Aria Health-Torresdale hospital.
About 3:30 a.m., a 25-year-old man was shot in the stomach on Summerdale Avenue near Roosevelt Boulevard, in Oxford Circle, police said.
That victim was in critical condition in Albert Einstein Medical Center.
College to honor bishop
The Most Rev. Robert P. Maginnis, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the Presidential Medal, awarded annually by Holy Family University. Sister M. Francesca Onley, Holy Family president, will present the award at 7 this evening at a dinner in the University Center. The medal is awarded annually to Catholic leaders in recognition of their service.
Emergency workshop June 9
The city's Office of Emergency Management will offer a free emergency-preparedness workshop open to the public in North Philadelphia June 9 at 6 p.m. in the 24th and 25th Police District headquarters, Whitaker Avenue near Erie. Attendees will learn how to provide shelter in their residences, about neighborhood-evacuation routes and about what emergency supplies and copies of important documents one should have ready.
SEPTA launches food drive
SEPTA is launching its first Philabundance food drive on Monday by collecting donated canned and boxed food throughout the transit system. The campaign, called "Stop Hunger at Your Station," ends June 15.
New zoo exhibit ready
The Philadelphia Zoo will cut the ribbon on the new $17.8 million McNeil Avian Center today in anticipation of the official public opening this weekend.
Golfers raise 150G
The Laborers' District Council Charity Fund held its 10th annual Charity Golf Classic Tuesday, raising more than $150,000 to be distributed to various charities.
$4.6M grant for KIPP School
The KIPP Philadelphia Charter School will receive $4.6 million from the Doris & Donald Fisher Fund and another organization to be announced at a ceremony today at the school, 2709 N. Broad St. The money will be used to open a second KIPP school in West Philadelphia this summer. *
