Be happy, guv tells law grads

Gov. Rendell yesterday told the graduating class of future lawyers at Temple University, including his son, Jesse, that there is more to practicing law than making money.

Rendell, himself a lawyer, said he's met many people who have become rich and famous but aren't happy. He said concentrating on public service and family may yield a less traditional type of success, but one that's ultimately more enriching. Jesse's mother, U.S. Circuit Judge Marjorie Rendell, watched from the audience.

Young thugs foiled

Neighbors came to the aid of a University of Pennsylvania archaeology professor who was robbed at gunpoint last night, police sources said. The 52-year-old professor, whose name was not released, was approached by two young thieves - ages 12 and 15 - near his car on Windsor Avenue near 47th Street about 7:45 p.m. The older crook aimed a pistol at the professor, which is when several residents on Windsor Avenue came out of their houses and shouted at the young robbers, the sources said. The youths ran off, but were nabbed minutes later by cops responding to neighbors' 9-1-1 calls. The pair were charged with robbery, sources said.

Pols want fair shake for PHA

A host of state politicians, including Sens. Arlen Specter and Bob Casey Jr., have asked the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to reconsider the way it plans to distribute $1 billion in stimulus aid to public housing agencies. HUD intends to favor agencies rated as "high performers" during a multi-round competition for the last batch of stimulus cash.

The Philadelphia Housing Authority and 34 other agencies across the state aren't considered "high performers." PHA received about $90 million in March, when HUD doled out $3 billion in stimulus money.
