Off-duty cop intervenes in shootout, kills 1
The dead youth is the son of another Philadelphia police officer, according to a police source who wanted to remain anonymous. A homicide detective said the victim was 15 years old.
Police said that the off-duty cop was inside his vehicle when he witnessed two men jump out of a vehicle about 3:30 p.m. and allegedly open fire at a man who stood on a sidewalk on Broad Street near Chew Avenue, police said.
The cop then pursued the shooters, who jumped back into the car and sped down Broad Street.
A short distance away, police said, the two suspects left the vehicle and ran down Broad Street between Duncannon and Fisher avenues.
The off-duty officer left his vehicle, followed them, identified himself as a police officer and ordered them to drop their weapons, police said.
The cop then fired his weapon, fatally wounding one suspect after he saw the youth reach for his waistband, police said. The cop was not injured.
The 18-year-old man shot on the sidewalk was in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the leg at Albert Einstein Medical Center. Two semiautomatic handguns were later recovered near the scene of the second shooting and outside a nearby residence. One person was in custody but police had not specified his involvement in the incident.
Police said that the police officer is on administrative duty pending an investigation by the Internal Affairs Division and Homicide Unit, which is standard procedure when an officer discharges a weapon. *
