Heist latest vs. Asian biz owners

Yesterday's fatal stabbing of Robert Chae, a successful Korean-American businessman who ran a beauty shop at Suburban Station, came just a month after authorities in Philadelphia and Upper Darby arrested five men in connection with at least 10 armed robberies and home invasions that mainly targeted Asian-Americans.

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood Sr. said his detectives recently learned of three additional cases that went unreported last year by fearful victims. Here are some recent reports of home invasions:

* Dec. 18: Four armed thugs stormed into an Upper Darby house owned by a Bangladeshi family that owns a dollar store in Southwest Philadelphia, stealing $3,000, jewelry and credit cards.

* Dec. 5: In Collingdale, Delaware County, masked gunmen climbed into the apartment above the China Moon Restaurant on MacDade Boulevard where the restaurant owners live. An undetermined amount of money was stolen. One shot was fired, but no injuries were reported, police said.

* Dec. 3: A 51-year-old South Korean woman who had just closed her Upper Darby business was entering her home on Ferguson Avenue near Anthony in Marple when two men, one with a gun, busted through the door.

The woman's 15-year-old son tried to help his mother but was pushed down by the men, according to police. The robbers made off with a briefcase filled with about $1,500 in cash that the woman had brought from her business to her house.

* Dec. 1: Three armed burglars entered the house of a South Korean couple, also in Marple, on Hampshire Drive near South Central Boulevard, through an unlocked door about a half-hour after the wife had returned home from the shop she owns in Southwest Philadelphia, police said. The men bound the couple with duct tape and beat them on the head with their handguns.

The trio ransacked the house for more than an hour, robbing the couple of $2,000 in cash, furs, handbags, jewelry and family heirlooms.

* Nov. 29: An Asian-American man and his pregnant wife were robbed in the driveway of their Middletown, Delaware County, home, on Lenni Road as they returned from their business at the Springfield Mall. Two men who apparently had tailed their Mercedes-Benz from the mall later admitted to stealing about $5,000 in cash, credit cards and jewelry, including the woman's wedding ring, police said. *
