DC 33 leader re-elected despite labor complaints
In a 2,668-to-1,922 vote, Matthews turned back challenger Evon Sutton, business agent of AFSCME Local 488, to keep his $248,398-a-year job as head of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees District Council 33.
Matthews' four-member slate also won, despite two complaints filed with the regional office of the U.S. Department of Labor during the campaign.
This was the third time Sutton ran against Matthews, including once for vice president and twice for president on opposition slates.
Sutton is the wife of DC 33's former president James Sutton, who was unseated by Matthews in 1996.
The union's No. 2 job went to Elizabeth "Bette" MacDonald, who beat Van Cooper in the 2,697-to-1,865 election for secretary-treasurer. The job's former occupant earned $193,075-a-year.
Bobby Davis, of Local 696, won the job as vice president in a 2,565-to-1,971 vote against Fred Cummings.
Walter Glover and Maria Santos won positions as sergeants at arms.
The American Arbitration Association counted a total of 4,616 mail ballots for each office. Some ballots were blank, or voided by election officials, for each office.
The union's contract with the city expires June 30. *
