Cell-phone service available underground on the El

Tired of having your cell-phone signal fade away when you ride the Market-Frankford El underground?

Well, if you're an AT&T user, you're in luck.

AT&T officials said yesterday its customers can now make calls, send text messages and check their e-mails when they ride the blue line underground, thanks to a new wireless system that the communications company installed in the city.

Cell-phone service has long been available on the above-ground parts of the El, but AT&T officials spent the past few months working with SEPTA to extend coverage to the underground area, from 2nd to 40th streets, said AT&T spokeswoman Ellen Webner.

"The plan is to do the same thing with the Broad Street line" later, she said. SEPTA spokesman Gary Fairfax said the new coverage will allow riders to make calls in the event that they have an emergency or witness a crime - a comforting idea, given the recent spate of attacks on commuters. But he said the system will not take the place of police officers or call boxes. *
