4 boys sought in assault of 10th grade girl at S. Philly High

A 16-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in the middle of the day at South Philadelphia High School, police and school officials said yesterday.

Shortly after 1 p.m. the 10th grader was attacked by several male students inside a room in or near the back of the auditorium, said Fernando Gallard, a spokesman for the school district.

"At this point, it looks like a 10th-grade female was sexually assaulted by two boys," he said. "They were caught in the act by a school district safety personnel."

The two boys and a third boy who was in the room fled and are being sought, Gallard said.

Philadelphia police, however, said four males were being sought. The victim was taken to Jefferson University Hospital in stable condition, said Officer Jillian Russell, a Police Department spokeswoman.

"We're treating this as a sexual assault and we are assisting the Philadelphia police in the investigation," Gallard said.

South Philadelphia High, with nearly 1,400 students, at Broad Street and Snyder Avenue, was rocked by another sex scandal just last month.

On Feb. 5 Joshua Uhrich, a special-education teacher, was arrested on charges he had sex with a 14-year-old female student he met on MySpace, an Internet social-networking site.

Uhrich, 30, of Allentown, was suspended without pay, Gallard said, and has been charged with statutory sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, unlawful contact with a minor and other offenses.

Though the girl in Uhrich's case is a student at South Philadelphia High, they met online for the first time, not at school, police said. *
