Nutter launches city greening initiative

Mayor Nutter wants the city to go green.

So, yesterday he announced the kickoff of a greening initiative project during the last day of the Philadelphia Flower Show.

The "We Love Philadelphia Cleaning and Greening Initiative" is a five-week program that will encourage residents to take pride in their neighborhoods by educating them about gardening and showing them ways to beautify their homes and apartments, and gather neighborhood support for community gardens to revitalize neighborhoods.

The program "was really part of Mayor Nutter's ongoing commitment to making Philadelphia a cleaner and greener city," said Doug Oliver, spokesman for the mayor's office.

He said the effort will include workshop training in gardening techniques from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

"This initiative is a great part of the mayor's ongoing effort to making the city a place where everyone can love where they live and one that we look forward to all Philadelphians embracing," Oliver said. *
