TV show eyed to solve '07 crime
Clinton Harriott, a West Philadelphia bar owner, was kidnapped by five men, held for ransom and tortured for four agonizing hours in July.
Harriott, 45, narrowly escaped a gruesome death and positively identified two of his kidnappers, Lamont Cooke, 21, and Shawn Clarke, 35, both of whom lived in West Philly.
But the alleged kidnappers were never caught, leaving Harriott without a sense of resolution or peace of mind.
Worse yet, police said they believe that Cooke has committed a murder in Maryland while he's been on the run.
Enter Walsh, the host of TV's "America's Most Wanted." The popular show - which claims to have helped capture 973 criminals - will feature Harriott's harrowing case in an episode that will air at 9 tonight.
Veteran cops who handled the initial investigation into Harriott's kidnapping said they hope the show will yield some helpful leads.
"The show has been very successful. Usually, the person featured is in custody in a short period of time," said Lt. John Walker, of Southwest Detectives.
Walker said Harriott "wants to move on" with his life, but is disturbed by the lack of arrests.
Both Walker and Detective Joe Murray worked the initial investigation and will be featured in interviews during the episode, which will also feature a reenactment of the crime.
Harriott was ambushed at his bar on July 19, where four men shot and stabbed him. Harriott was then duct-taped around the hands and face and then thrown into a van.
The kidnappers hid Harriott in a basement on Cedarhurst Street near 60th and called his family for thousands of dollars in ransom money.
Police said his family heard Harriott being stabbed and shot in the background. According to police reports, one of the suspects asked another, "What did you guys do with the ax? I'm gonna chop off his foot."
Murray said he hopes the national spotlight will lead authorities to Cooke, Clarke and their three accomplices. *
