Dan Gross: J-Roll, Victorino in union ad

WE DON'T KNOW their take on the SEPTA strike, but Jimmy Rollins and outfielder Shane Victorino have made their position clear when it comes to the Employee Free Choice Act.

The Phillies teammates appear in a new AFL-CIO ad supporting the congressional bill that would make it easier for workers to join labor unions.

The Major League Baseball Players Association asked the pair, who support the initiative, to pose for the ad, which recently ran in the Politico newspaper and can be seen on PhillyGossip.com.

Rollins and Victorino appear alongside Yankees infielder Mark Teixeira (Booooooo!) and nine other MLB players "who were gracious enough to lend their names to the ad to support workers all across the country," says AFL-CIO Eddie Vale. Vale is a Mets fan but said yesterday that he was rooting for the Phillies, because "I hate the Yankees even more."

Murphy back on diaper duty

Congratulations to U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy and his wife, Jenni, who Monday welcomed a son, John Martin Murphy. The baby, already going by Jack, weighed in at 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and has a 3-year-old sister, Maggie.

Murphy, an Army veteran who served in Iraq joked to friends that "although he's named after two Navy men," grandfather Jack Murphy and great-grandfather Henry Martin, "you can bet he'll be joining me in cheering for Army over Navy in Philly in a couple weeks."

Rollins and Victorino really need to keep quiet on this kind of stuff. Its inappropriate. Especially at a time like this where people are hurting just trying to get to work. The last thing I want to hear about is two millionaires telling me how I should support these fool labor unions. I will never support them, especially after what they are putting this city through.

It's totally appropriate for Rollins and Victorino to express support for the Employee Free Choice Act if they so choose (last I checked, we still had freedom of speech in this country - no support from me for the TWU either, though). They, and the rest of the team, should keep quiet about predicting World Series victories in advance, but that's about it.

@ wek..of course they have freedom of speech. but they also have an option to keep their mouths shut. It makes them look stupid. Do you really think their union of ball players really cares about the TWU? Its just a show. Just like all these other idiot musicians and hollywood opening their traps. Do I really care what guys like Springsteen think about the president? NO, but he should keep his mouth shut about it, he would sell more records rather than dividing his fan base. Its just a poor decision to open up on controversial issues. I dont go around work telling people how to think, neither should these people.

You all act like union membership is a crime. The real crime is the exploitation of the working class, coupled with the rich conservatives convincing the middle class that they're on the same page. I applaud Rollins and Victorino. Maybe if there was more union membership, people wouldn't have been dumped the way the were the past two years and I wouldn't have to hear the same tired qualification for every non-union argument..."in these dire/hard/tough/etc times"...

Doesn't this particular act eliminate the secret ballot? To me, "free choice" means the right join a union or not to join a union. If not being able to cast your ballot in secret would make you more open to pressure from EITHER direction then that portion if the bill impedes free choice. I'm not fully aquainted with the details, but I have read about the elimination of the secret ballot and can't see any sane reason to include that. I'm certainly open to clarification.

It's bad that Rollins and Victorino are spouting off about something they know nothing about. The so-called Employee Free Choice Act would effectively eliminate the use of secret ballots in union organization elections, while binding arbitration would make way for federal arbitrators to impose economically unsound packages on businesses. Maybe if they had concentrated more on baseball instead of trying to enrich big lar bosses the outcome would have been different.

Union membership should be a crime. It's responsible for GM's demise, it's the reason Septa is on life support from the state. When I want to make more money, I go back to school, I work harder, I innovate. When a union member wants to make more money - they threaten to stop working. I say fire all of em. If they're so severely underpaid - then let them go find work elsewhere at a higher wage.

The number 1 thing that unions do is exploit their workers... and destroy individualism.

I think that the government should bring in the National Guard to run the transit lines. The US Army ran the transit company back in 1944 during a strike and they should do it again.

Everyone saying that Rollins and Victorio know nothing about this, uhhhh.....THEY ARE IN A UNION. They are in the most powerful union that exists, the MLBPA. Just because you don't wear a hard hat doesn't mean you don't know what it's like to be "UNION". I love this comments section, it makes me feel so much smarter then I probably am.
