Dan Gross: Mary Carey: Sixer Jason Smith's a great kisser
Sources tell us the group also consisted of Louis Amundson and Shavlik Randolph. The busty blonde told us last night that Smith said he was a fan of her movies and referred to her as "a goddess" before they kissed. 76ers spokesman Michael Preston said yesterday that the team "does not comment on our players' social lives." Carey, who recently danced at the Creekside Cabaret, in Colmar, is a huge basketball fan, and was recently seen on VH1's "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew." An hour after we spoke with Carey, her manager, David Weintraub, called to say that Carey misspoke when she said she and Smith had made out. Weintraub denied what we consider to be obvious, that someone on Smith's behalf contacted him seeking some type of damage control. He wasted no time explaining just how important he is and mentioning he has his own show, "Sons of Hollywood," on A&E, while trying to squash this story.
Henenlotter back with new film
If a monster penis with a mind of its own isn't up your alley, then Frank Henenlotter's "Bad Biology" may not be your kind of film. The horror master receives the Philadelphia Film Festival's Phantasmagoria award before the world premiere of his film at 9:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Prince Music Theater (1412 Chestnut). Henenlotter, who wrote and directed the "Basket Case" trilogy and "Frankenhooker," had not made a film since 1992's Basket Case 3" but in 2005 his friend R.A "The Rugged Man" Thorburn approached him and they came up with the idea for this bizarre offering centering on a woman with seven clitorides (which is, in fact, the plural of clitoris), whose "freak p---y," as she calls it, leads to her giving birth to mutant babies whom she abandons in garbage cans.
Have we told you it's a comedy?
We asked Henenlotter if he'd seen "Pervert," a 2006 sexploitation/horror/comedy by Rydal-raised Jonathan Yudis and West Mount Airy native Mike Davis, which also features a detachable penis that terrorizes women. He said he has not seen the film, but wonders if runaway monster penises "are a trend." Meanwhile, Philly rapper Vinnie Paz of Jedi Mind Tricks is hilarious in a scene opposite a woman in a vagina mask. The director has offers for U.S. distribution of the film, but he's cautiously realistic. "Let's see if the audience burns the theater down at this screening," he said. The film also plays Saturday at the Prince. For a full film schedule, visit phillyfests.com.
Out and about
Julius Erving hit Capital Grille (1338 Chestnut) for a salmon lunch yesterday. Hours earlier, Sen. Barack Obama told Angelo Cataldi and Co. on the 610 WIP morning show that he wanted to grow up to be Doctor J . . . Actor Luke Wilson was casual in a red/black flannel shirt and brown slacks while dining Tuesday in a small party at Amada (217 Chestnut). The actor's here shooting the indie comedy "Tenure," at Bryn Mawr College.
Local chef makes Ramsay puke
It may be a good thing that Matt Sigel cooks only breads and pastries at the Radisson Warwick and Tavern 17. His fine cuisine skills turned the stomach of Chef Gordon Ramsay on Tuesday night's season premiere of Fox's "Hell's Kitchen." Ramsay puked after sampling Sigel's signature dish, a plate consisting of venison, diver scallops, shaved white chocolate, capers, and quail eggs. Sigel's among contestants vying for the head chef slot at Ramsay's new restaurant, London, opening this summer in Hollywood. Sigel told us yesterday that despite Ramsay's reaction, other chefs will steal his scallops/chocolate combo.
Edwards leads to engagement
Congratulations to Rebecca Kirszner - Mount Airy native and former aide to legislators Chaka Fattah, Allyson Schwartz and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid - who just got engaged to James Katz. Katz, 27, is a New York native pursuing degrees in law and public policy at Harvard. Kirszner, 32, and Katz, who now live in Cambridge, Mass., met while working on John Edwards' 2004 presidential campaign, and began dating in 2006. *
