Popular NYC costume provider sets up shop in Rittenhouse

Every year in late October, bouncers are stationed outside each location of Ricky's New York City locations to make sure not too many people muscle their way in at one time. What are they protecting? Halloween costumes.

Every year in late October, bouncers are stationed outside each location of Ricky's New York City locations to make sure not too many people muscle their way in at one time. What are they protecting? Halloween costumes.

Usually a beauty supply and accessories shop that deals in everything from pro products to the totally out-there (think drag-queen chic), Ricky's turns into a Halloween emporium for a few short weeks each year. For the first time, Ricky's has set up a pop-up shop in Rittenhouse (1428 Walnut St.) that will remain open until the first week of November. This opening marks the store's first foray into Philadelphia, and makes it the only Halloween store in Center City.

At the Rittenhouse store, there are children's costumes on the first floor and adult's costumes in the basement, with costume-specific accessories dispersed throughout. Manager Keith Douglas estimates that adult costumes run, on average, between $40 and $70, while children's are $30 to $50. And so no one is left costumeless, Douglas promises a replenishment of wares weekly.

If this incarnation does well, Ricky's head honchos are considering a permanent move to Philly. They don't have a location just yet, but according to Douglas, they want to stay in Rittenhouse. "They love this area," says Douglas.
