Tattle: Ready for a 'Laverne and Shirley' remake?

REGULAR READERS of this column know of our obsession with ridiculous and unnecessary Hollywood remakes.

Sure, we need a new version of "My Fair Lady," because the one with Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn, which won eight Oscars, including best picture, wasn't good enough.

Now comes this: At Monday night's premiere of "Valentine's Day," director Garry Marshall told "Extra's" Mario Lopez that he wants to do a "Laverne and Shirley" movie.

Huh?

Is the world waiting to see how a new generation of actors reinterprets Lenny and Squiggy?

The crazier part of the story is that the new Laverne and Shirley may be babes - Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel.

"We're gonna work on that," Marshall said of the idea of doing a remake. "My sister Penny [Marshall] and Cindy [Williams] are gonna have a guest cameo. They're gonna walk 'schlemiel, schlemazel' - or they're gonna get tired in the middle and sit down."

Asked by "Extra" if Jen and Jess were game to don hair nets in a Milwaukee brewery and learn to jitterbug from Carmine, Garner replied, "Are you kidding? We're dying to do it!"

The tooth hurts

Lil Wayne has gotten a temporary reprieve from jail - for dental surgery.

So, before he gets a cavity search, he's going to get a cavity search (rim shot).

The rapper's sentencing in a New York City gun case was postponed yesterday, because he needs to finish a string of recent surgeries before he goes to jail - possibly for as long as year.

Sentencing now is scheduled for March 2. Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Charles Solomon said that it wouldn't be put off any further.

Defense attorney Stacey Richman said that Lil Wayne was headed home to Miami for dental work Friday. She declined to specify his malady.

"It is a medical situation that, like [it would for] any of us, has to be addressed," she said outside court. She said that the rapper had planned to take care of it before yesterday but that his dentist had been out of the country doing charitable work.

Tattbits

* Oscar and Grammy winner Jamie Foxx yesterday encouraged the next generation of musicians to pursue their passion. Foxx made his exhortation at L.A.'s Walt Disney Concert Hall, where he helped present $500,000 in new violins, flutes, French horns, trumpets and drums to students from 16 high schools nationwide.

The donated instruments are part of the Fidelity FutureStage program, an effort by the investment firm to enrich arts education in public schools.

* Levi Johnston, the Alaska teen whose sole claim to fame is knocking up Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol, is featured on the cover of the new print version of Playgirl magazine.

Oh, little Tripp must be so proud.

The nude photos of Levi, 19, were a huge hit last fall on Playgirl's Web site, and the publisher expects the same results with other photos from the same shoot running in the newly resurrected print version.

Playgirl spokesman Daniel Nardicio says that the spread includes an interview with Levi because, let's face it, he has a lot on his mind.

* The White Stripes say that the Air Force Reserve made unauthorized use of their song "Fell in Love With a Girl" during an ad that ran in certain markets during Sunday's Super Bowl telecast.

The White Stripes and their label, Third Man Records, said in a statement that the song was rerecorded and used by the Air Force Reserve without permission. They added that they take "strong insult" to the ad and said it implies that the White Stripes "encourage recruitment during a war that we do not support."

The Air Force Reserve said in a statement that the music in the ad was original and that it never intended to use any existing music or "to sound like any music by the band White Stripes."

* Oscar-winner Louis Gossett Jr. said he is being treated for prostate cancer.

In an announcement yesterday, Gossett said that the disease was caught early and that he expects to make a full recovery.

Gossett, 73, said that he is going public about his prostate cancer because there is not enough emphasis in the African-American community on fighting it with preventive examinations and early treatment.

* Rat Pack legends Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin will each get his own place on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars.

Las Vegas Walk of Stars spokesman Pablo Castro Zavala said that stars for the crooners would be unveiled Feb. 22 in a ceremony at the Flamingo Las Vegas casino-resort. The stars will then be placed in the sidewalk outside the Flamingo on the Las Vegas Strip.

What took so long? Who could get stars in Vegas before Frank and Dino?

* What with eight kids, divorce court drama, a TV show and all those hairdresser appointments, how does Kate Gosselin find time to write?

Her new book, "I Just Want You to Know," is scheduled for release in April from Christian- book publisher Zondervan.

Zondervan said yesterday that the book features excerpts, prayers and memories from Kate's journal, offering readers a look at her life during the three years her family went from obscurity to fame on TLC's "Jon & Kate Plus 8." Zondervan says that the book includes eight letters, one addressed to each of her children, covering a variety of topics.

It should have one letter to her ex-husband covering a variety of obscenities.
