Music critics' picks

POP

There ain't been as much sunshine since Bill Withers walked away from his hit-making music career 23 years ago. Filmmakers Alex Vlack and Damani Baker convinced the husky-voiced musician ("Just the Two of Us," "Lean on Me," "Ain't No Sunshine") to open up about his life for the documentary "Still Bill," screening in a First Person Festival event that includes a Q&A with the filmmakers and a performance by Motown legend Johnny Ingram.

Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine St., 7:30-9:30 p.m. Sunday, $30 ($25 FPA members), 267-402-2055, www.firstpersonarts.org.

HIP-HOP

Earlier this year, platinum-selling Raekwon followed up his 1994 classic, "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx" with the aptly titled and easily abbreviated "OB4CL Part 2." With a back-to-basics approach focusing on the gritty street narratives and dark, dusty production that made the Wu-Tang Clan icons in the mid- to late-'90s, the Staten Island rapper affectionately known as "The Chef" has crafted an album that should top many hip-hop critics' album-of-the-year short lists. Along for the ride is Sean Price, who also emerged during the Wu-Tang era of New York hip-hop, and who has found a new following among today's listeners. Buy your tix in advance and snag "OB4CL Pt. 2" for an extra $5.

First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 8 p.m. Tuesday, all ages, 215-563-3980, www.philauu.org.

ALTERNATIVE

When almost everything indie and alternative has become mainstream, it's hard to define "outsider" music. But the Internet provides a venue for unconventional voices that don't always work within what's considered underground cool. This month, Sherman Arts presents the Outsider Music Festival, a showcase of new artists and a tribute to the giants of the genre. Tonight (at Green Line) and Monday (at National Mechanics) is childlike Canadian Casio chanteuse BJ Snowden. The Monday show also features a tribute to cult '60s sister act the Shaggs and to Moby Grape genius Skip Spence from the Sixth Borough's Tabitha Vidaurri and singer/songwriter Bob Carlton.

Green Line Café, 45th and Locust streets, 7 tonight, $5-$7, all ages, 215-222-0799. National Mechanics, 22 S. 3rd St., 9 p.m. Monday, free, 215-701-4883, ww.shermanarts.org.

JAZZ

In conjunction with its retrospective examining the career of Armenian-born painter Arshile Gorky, the Art Museum presents an evening of music by a pianist sharing the same heritage. Armen Donelian was born to Armenian parents in Jackson Heights, N.Y., and has since delved into the music of his ancestry, combining jazz and Armenian folk songs. Donelian's jazz background includes stints with legends Mongo Santamaria and Sonny Rollins during a 30-year-plus career; he began traveling to Armenia in 1998. He will perform with his regular trio mates, bassist David Clark and drummer George Schuller.

Philadelphia Museum of Art, 26th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway, 5:45 and 7:15 tonight, free with regular museum admission of $16, 215-763-8100, www.philamuseum.org.

CLASSICAL

Imani Winds has been charming audiences for 12 years. Forging a career as a wind quintet is a long shot, but this group has beaten the odds with a lot of talent plus faith - imani in Swahili. Their repertoire is vast, blending works by major composers with unexpected gems. This visit brings Woodwind Quintets by Elliott Carter and Pavel Haas, plus the Trio for oboe, clarinet and bassoon by the Brazilian master Heitor Villa-Lobos. Interspersed with those gems are arrangements of Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue" (by Imani flutist Valerie Coleman), Astor Piazzolla's "Libertango" (hornist Jeff Scott's arrangement) and Paquito D'Rivera's "Aires Tropicales." Savvy music lovers will catch Armen Donelian's jazz sets in the Great Stair Hall before heading to Van Pelt Auditorium for this splendid mix of world music.

Philadelphia Museum Of Art, 26th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway, 8 tonight, $23, 215-569-8080, www.pcmsconcerts.org.
