GIMME FIVE
"The Big Heat" is the only title on "Noir Classics" that cracks the list of Top Ten in the film noir genre. The five most widely acknowledged classics are:
1. "The Maltese Falcon." 1941. John Huston directs this adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's novel, with Humphrey Bogart playing private eye Sam Spade.
2. "Out of the Past." 1947. Robert Mitchum plays a man running from a mysterious past.
3. "Double Indemnity." 1944. Billy Wilder directs an all-star cast: Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, Edward G. Robinson.
4. "Kiss Me Deadly." 1955. Mickey Spillane's tough-guy detective Mike Hammer is played by Ralph Meeker.
5. "The Big Sleep." 1946. Bogart and Bacall. Enough said.
