Music critics' picks

POP . . . plus

How does a carmaker get a young audience to sniff around its cool, new, youth-targeted vehicle? By luring them to a weekend-long festival of free music (live and DJ spun), art, video and more. Then by rewarding test drivers with tickets to an event-capping concert by MGMT, that frisky, electro-pop duo almost everyone was buzzing about way back in 2008. Kia's the sponsor of the Soul Collective Tour, today through Sunday. Live music tonight includes Popo at 6:15 and Amanda Blank at 7. Tomorrow, check out the Drums at 6:15 p.m., then Francis & the Lights at 7 p.m. Sunday, MGMT goes on at 8 p.m. Test-drives of the Kia Soul (and those comp tickets) are available noon to 8 p.m. today, tomorrow and Sunday. There's no age limit, but a valid driver's license is required.

23rd Street Armory, 22 S. 23rd St. More info at kiasoulcollective.com.

HIP-HOP, R&B

Anybody with even a passing familiarity with hip-hop knows that the DJ is one of the most important elements in the music as well as the culture. Philly DJ Day 2009 is our town's officially sanctioned celebration of the men and women behind the turntables. The event got started in 2008 through the efforts of DJ Excel, photographer Jonene Taddei and Kamau Stanford. The first event brought out famous Philly DJs such as Jazzy Jeff, DJ Drama and even Mayor "Mix Master Mike" Nutter. This year, the event features a massive block party on Parkside Avenue, an Old School DJ Battle as well as vendors, demonstrations, food and, of course, dozens of the area's hottest DJs.

ALTERNATIVE

On Aug. 22, the Philly music scene lost one of its kindest members (and my former co-worker), Bobby Wolter, who succumbed to cystic fibrosis at age 28. He drummed for the Weeds, Love Syndicate, Steph Hayes and the Good Problems, and many others. On Sunday, many of the musicians who had the pleasure of knowing and playing with him will host a tribute, which doubles as a benefit for the Research Fund for Cystic Fibrosis. Among them are Brian McTear, Steph Hayes and the Good Problems, Stargazer Lily's Susan Rosetti, and Mia Johnson.

The Gryphon Café, 105 W. Lancaster Ave., Wayne, 3:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday, donations accepted, 610-688-1988.

JAZZ

Undoubtedly the last true legend of jazz, Sonny Rollins has a firmly secured place in the music's history and its rarefied echelon of giants. But don't head to this show, kicking off Kimmel Center Presents' 09/10 season, just to see a museum piece: the 79-year-old Rollins remains one of the fiercest, most inventive saxophonists, not just in history but on the current scene. That his longtime band never really matches the leader's imaginative leaps hardly matters; Rollins is the star of the show. Notoriously demanding, Rollins finally allowed some of that live magic to be released last year as "Road Shows, Vol. 1," a title that entices with the prospect of more archive-opening to come.

Verizon Hall, Kimmel Center, 260 S. Broad St., 8 tonight, $36-$79, 215-893-1999, www.kimmelcenter.org.

CLASSICAL

Composer George Crumb is revered for his otherworldly journeys into ethereal sonic landscapes. He also set revered tunes into six "American Songbooks," all premiered by our local Orchestra 2001. To celebrate his 80th birthday and conductor James Freeman's 70th, the orchestra will perform a sampling from the first three Songbooks tonight and from the final three on Sunday. They'll be sung by the composer's daughter, Ann Crumb, Jamie van Eyck and Barbara Ann Martin. The concert begins with music by three composers who studied with Crumb at the University of Pennsylvania, James Primosch, Jay Reise and Anna Weesner. Brad Smith will conduct Reise's work.

Perelman Theater, Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Broad and Spruce streets, 8 tonight, $30, 215-893-1999; and Lang Concert Hall, Swarthmore College, 500 College Ave., Swarthmore, 3 p.m. Sunday, free, 215-922-2190, www.orchestra2001.org.
