Who's playing music, and where, in and around town this week

Live music and more, tonight through Thursday, compiled by Shaun Brady, Tom Di Nardo, James Johnson and Jonathan Takiff. Alternative music by Sara Sherr will be back next week.

POP

"Movin' Out": Pitch-perfect Matthew Friedman and Kyle Martin trade off as the "Piano Man" singing narrator, as a large cast of Twyla Tharp-choregraphed dancers turn Billy Joel's anthems into a dramatic, tour-de-force ballet. Academy of Music, Broad and Locust streets, 8 tonight, 2 and 8 p.m. tomorrow, 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, $25-$100, www.kimmelcenter.org.

Asleep at the Wheel: Musicians come and go (more than 80!), but South Jersey-spawned Ray Benson continues to steer this hipster blend of country-western and jazz that is "Western Swing." Sellersville Theater, Main and Temple streets, Sellersville, 6 & 9 tonight, $29.50, 215-257-5808, www.st94.com.

Peaches: Sexually provocative electronic-pop artist will rouse with tunes like "F*** the Pain Away," accompanied by her band, the Herms. (That's short for Hermaphrodites, Herb.) TLA, 334 South St., 9 tonight, $23, 215-922-1011, www.livenation.com.

The Proclaimers: Identical twin brothers Craig and Charlie Reid serve up feisty, folk-rock laced with their hearty Edinburgh accents. Tin Angel, 20 S. 2nd, tonight (sold out) and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, $18, 215-928-0978, www.tinangel.com.

Libby Johnson: Haunting, full-throated vocalist/composer (formerly of 22 Brides) most definitely has the knack. With Phil Minnisale and Amanda Penecale. Steel City Coffee House, 203 Bridge St., Phoenixville, 8 tonight, $12, 610-933-4043, www.steelcitycoffeehouse.com.

Grimace Federation/Players Club: Jam time. The Grimace team seems a techier version of Medeski, Martin & Wood. The Club boasts members of Disco Biscuits, Brothers Past, Bodega and the Ally. TLA, 334 South St., 9 p.m. tomorrow, $15, 215-922-1011, www.livenation.com.

The Shins: Not a kick to yours, these guys have a genteel, sweet-rocking sound. Also warming the ears, the rustic rubber soul of Delta Spirit. Electic Factory, 7th and Willow streets, 8:30 p.m. tomorrow, $34-$36, 215-336-2000, www.livenation.com.

Ramblin' Jack Elliott: Legendary Brooklyn cowboy hit the road with Woody Guthrie and taught Bob Dylan a thing or two. Sellersville Theater, Main and Temple streets, Sellersville, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, $19.50, www.st94.com.

Morlgbl: Progressive French instrumental trio plays to extremes - languid, electric-jazz fusiony and dance-floor pumping. The equally unpronounceable (but from New Jersey) Mirthrandir shares the prog mindset. And, please to note, shows are starting earlier most nights. North Star, 27th and Poplar streets, 7 p.m. Sunday, $10, 215-787-0488, www.northstarbar.com.

MMRBQ 2009: Boogie rock legends ZZ Top haven't aged a bit. They still look like Methuselah! Also slathered with sauce, the Offspring, Papa Roach, Puddle of Mudd, Duff McKagan's Loaded, Halestorm and Saliva. Susquehanna Bank Center, 1 Harbour Blvd., Camden, 3 p.m. Sunday, $75, lawnseats $49.50 or $37.25 (each in 4-pack) and $32.17 (each in 6-pack), 856-365-1300, www.livenation.com.

Los Straitjackets/Southern Culture on the Skids: Los Straitjackets brazenly serve up surf guitar, garage rock and jazzbo instrumentals old and new, the fodder of their crafty new "Further Adventures" set. Add the greasy Southern Culture, and the guitar tremors should be seismic. World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St., 7:30 p.m. Sunday, $25-$35, 215-222-1400, www.worldcafelive.com.

Off With Their Heads: Hoarse, anthemic punk-rock trio from Minneapolis, promises a slamming good time. With Higher Giant and Detournament. Barbary, 951 N. Frankford Ave., 6:30 p.m. Monday, $10 (all ages), 866-468-7619, r5productions.com.

The Prodigy: Electronic dance-pop rules the night with these genre legends. Electric Factory, 7th and Willow streets, 8 p.m. Tuesday, $29.50-$32.50, 215-336-2000, www.livenation.com.

English Beat: Dave Wakelin and the masters of ska-rock will have you twisting all night with gems like "Save It for Later" and the world's best cover of "Tears of a Clown." Sellersville Theater, Main and Temple streets, Sellersville, 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday (the latter with Ruder Than You), $33, 215-257-5805, www.st94.com.

Ben Lee: Girls (some quite famous) have melted at the feet of this tender, romantic folk-pop singer from Australia. He returns the favor with his 7th album, "The Rebirth of Venus." Low vs. Diamond, a 2008 iTunes pick to click, and the acoustic-minded, instantly agreeable California quartet Dawes also earn sets. World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St., 8 p.m. Tuesday, $19-$24, 215-222-1400, worldcafelive.com.

Chrisette Michele: Compelling soul/pop (with jazz accents) vocal talent hit No. 1 this week on Soundscan with her new "Epiphany" album. Get up close and personal at a "meet and greet" that may feature an impromptu performance. Sephora, King of Prussia Mall, 160 N. Gulph Road, King of Prussia, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, free, 610-265-8888.

The Secret Handshake/My Favorite Highway: Earnest and poppy. That's key to both acts. The Morning Of and The Bigger Lights also share this all-ages-welcome (21 to drink) bill. Balcony, 10th and Arch streets, 7 p.m. Tuesday, $10/$12, 215-336-2000, www.r5productions.com.

Easy Dub All-Stars: The collective's spaced-out, island-flavored remake of "Dark Side of the Moon" spent five years on the reggae chart. Then came "Dubside with Radiodread," a remake of Radiohead's "OK Computer." Now what's really killin' us is their newly toked-up, echo-enhanced rub-a-dub rendering of "Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club." Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad opens. World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut St., 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, $19 & $24, 215-222-1400, www.worldcafelive.com.
