For those keeping score at home, last night's HD debut makes CBS the second network to launch a high-definition evening news broadcast. "The NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams" has been high-def since March 2007.

"ABC World News Tonight with Charles Gibson" plans to go HD the week of Sept. 8, an ABC spokeswoman said yesterday.

More 'Hopkins' to come

ABC News has added a seventh hour to its documentary series "Hopkins" (10 p.m. Thursdays, Channel 6), with the finale now scheduled to air Aug. 7.

Slot-swapping at CBS

CBS' "Greatest American Dog" and "Big Brother" are switching places, with 8 p.m. Wednesdays going to the dogs starting tomorrow, and "Brother's" eviction show moving to 8 p.m. Thursdays.

Last week, the network pulled a similar switch with its dramas "Flashpoint" (now at 10 p.m. Thursdays) and "Swingtown" (now at 10 p.m. Fridays).

'Torchwood' carries on

Good news for fans of Captain Jack (John Barrowman): BBC America has ordered a third, five-episode season of "Torchwood," scheduled to air in 2009. *
