Dan Gross: Jill Scott engaged

SONGBIRD Jill Scott announced during a show at Carnegie Hall last week that she was engaged to her drummer "Little" John Roberts after he came out from behind the kit to give her flowers and a passionate kiss. The Philly-raised Roberts, who toured with Janet Jackson, is the grandson of Hall of Fame boxer Harold Johnson and son of the Rev. John Roberts, who works in Philadelphia Family Court. Scott and husband Lyzel Williams divorced last year after five years of marriage.

Major gift from

Hollywood big

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg has pledged a generous donation to the National Museum of American Jewish History, sources say.

The museum is constructing a building on Independence Mall just a half block south of its location at 55 N. 5th Street. It hopes to open there in Fall 2010. A museum spokesman yesterday would neither confirm nor deny a Spielberg donation.

"A significant gift is in the works," Rachel Levin, associate director of Spielberg's Righteous Persons Foundation confirmed last night, declining to reveal a specific dollar amount just yet.

Other big donors to the museum include fashion mogul Sidney Kimmel, who gave $25 million, and Comcast-Spectacor boss Ed Snider, who donated $5 million.

Opie's girl sues newspaper

Lynsi Smigo, the Northeast-raised fiancee of radio host Gregg "Opie" Hughes, has sued the New York Post seeking $10 million over an April 23 item suggesting that she had made a sex tape with Chester County "Jackass" Bam Margera. The paper, presumably under legal pressure, reported May 5 that in fact Margera and Smigo had never even met.

On April 24 we wrote about Opie, of XM's "Opie & Anthony" show, offering $100,000 to anyone who could produce a copy of such a tape. The New York Post's Page Six item did not mention Smigo by name, but we did, on May 6, in covering Page Six's correction.

Smigo's suit cites our report in which we mentioned her having graduated from Archbishop Ryan and attending Drexel as adding to the pain and suffering she experienced as a result of the false and allegedly defamatory Post piece. Her suit was filed in New York State Supreme Court and also names Steppin' Out magazine's Chaunce Hayden in the suit, as he was quoted as the source in the Page Six item. Hayden wrote us several weeks before the suit was filed to say that "Steppin' Out magazine never published" the story as "we had the sense not to print such a story without first seeing a copy of the tape with our own eyes."

LaBelle, Gamble's new tune

"I Am an American" has the Sound of Philadelphia. Hitmaker Kenny Gamble produced the song, said to have been adopted by the late Reverend Father Divine, on which Patti LaBelle sings along with the Temple University Orchestra and Choir. The patriotic tune is available at digital retailers, the National Constitution Center and the Independence Visitor Center. The tune will also be played this week at Sunoco Welcome America! Festival events.
