Dan Gross: Mitch Williams still a little 'Wild'

MITCH WILLIAMS lived up to his "Wild Thing" nickname Saturday at a Catholic Youth Organization basketball game in Medford, N.J.

The former Phillies hurler cursed at a female referee who was calling a basketball game in which his daughter, a fifth-grader, was playing for St. Mary of the Lakes against Our Lady of Good Counsel.

Williams, who now sells his own brand of salsa and who later this month starts hosting a Phillies pre-game show on The Big Talker 1210 AM, told us yesterday that he was sorry for using the f-word while yelling at the ref. "I'm emotional when it comes to my kids. What I saw happening was completely unfair," Williams said, referring to his daughter's team being fouled repeatedly with a lack of calls from the refs. Williams also appears regularly on the morning show on 610 WIP-AM, and is a Phils post-game analyst on Comcast SportsNet. The apology isn't doing much for Ron Martin, who oversees referees as the Camden Board 34 independent assigner. He said yesterday that he called St. Mary of the Lakes to say that although the season ended last night, if Williams "is going to appear at any games next year, we will not officiate them. If he enters the gym in the middle of a game, we will stop officiating." Martin is executive editor of the Burlington County Times. "A lot of people challenge calls, but when someone hits on one of the magic words, we can't tolerate that stuff," he said. Martin said Williams' outburst is "not indicative of St. Mary's athletic program. There are some great people over there," he said. The 33-year-old female referee declined comment yesterday.

Clinton to call Booker's show today

Q102's Chris Booker has landed a bigger name than Alycia Lane. Sen. Hillary Clinton was to be interviewed by phone for 10 minutes on Booker's show at 8:50 this morning, her campaign confirmed last night. Booker said on air recently that he's a registered Democrat and was undecided between voting for Clinton or Sen. Barack Obama. He said that the Clinton campaign contacted the station to say she would be happy to be interviewed on-air. Booker told us last night that he's leaning toward Clinton as he likes her economic policy, and he declared the city "Hilladelphia" on his show today, but he says he still hasn't completely decided whom to vote for.

CBS 3's Bob Kelly, wife split up

CBS 3 traffic anchor Bob Kelly confirmed yesterday that he and his wife, Colleen, have separated and are in the process of a divorce. There's "no drama," Kelly says, adding that his focus has been on the couple's two young daughters. "It's funny how people pick up on the ring," Kelly said when we told him that it was viewers who wrote in saying he was no longer wearing his wedding band, which we noticed during the CBS 3 broadcast of the St. Patrick's Day Parade Sunday.

Bonaduce's Rittenhouse party

Danny Bonaduce will hang out at O.N.E (19th & Sansom), formerly the Mansion, after his fight Saturday night against Steve Kwasnik in a Damon Feldman Celebrity Boxing event at the Marple Sports Arena. The Broomall-born Bonaduce is now hosting "I Know My Kid's a Star," on VH1. The O.N.E. party is free before 11, with a $10 cover until 1 a.m. and a $20 cover after 1.

Sasha's sorry she can't sight-see

Olympic silver-medalist figure skater Sasha Cohen sounded upset yesterday that she won't be in town long enough to get out and see the city. Cohen is part of the Smuckers Stars on Ice Tour, which is coming to the Wachovia Center Thursday. She's not sure yet whether she'll try to compete in the 2010 Olympics, but for now she's on the road in the United States, Canada and Japan with the Smuckers tour. Cohen is far shorter and prettier than comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, of "Borat" fame, though she says they have met and briefly discussed having similar names.

Greeting fit for a Kingsley

People started greeting Thom Cardwell Saturday night as soon as he arrived at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute's Silver Screen gala at Bryn Mawr College. That's because they thought he was the guest of honor, Sir Ben Kingsley. Cardwell, of the Philadelphia Film Society, said Kingsley got a laugh when Cardwell told him that 6ABC's Jim Gardner once reported Kingsley was at a Philadelphia Film Festival party, when he had actually seen the always-dapper Cardwell. Cardwell says that Ann Meredith, of the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Pennsylvania, confessed that "she was stalking me for 15 minutes," thinking he was the Oscar winning "Gandhi" actor. *
