Almost all of Dobbins' players raced around the field in jubilation Friday following a 26-20, four-overtime success over host Roxborough.

"I jogged," he said.

Hey, at least he didn't collapse.

"That game was amazing, and exciting, but I was exhausted," he reported. "I had no more left. If we'd gone to a fifth OT? Well, I would have sucked it up."

No need. After the teams scored 20 points apiece through three OTs - yes, regulation was scoreless - Roxborough failed on its fourth extra-session possession thanks to Martin Culbreth's interception. Then, on third down, the 6-foot, 200-pound Stafford, a junior fullback and linebacker, powered 3 yards up the middle to end it.

The OTs took place at the wooded end of the field.

"Coach Zam [Lou Zambino] called timeout after first down," Stafford said. "I told him, 'I can do this. I'll get the job done.' [Tailback] Karon James got the call on second down, then it was my chance.

"It was a straight dive. Get it and go. I got pushed in with the pile and stretched the ball over the goal line. All Friday night, I was calling and texting my friends."

Dobbins' other TDs were scored by Kevin Butler (keeper), James (run) and Jamil Williams (pass from Butler) while James posted a conversion run. Roxborough countered with Marquise Ransom's fumble recovery, Chris Stoffere's pass to Braheem Ford and Akmed Greene's run. Demetrius Campbell caught a conversion pass.

One has to wonder, are 46 points maybe a national record (any level) for a game that featured no scoring in regulation?

Anyway, Stafford batted down another conversion pass in addition to making five tackles. As regulation ended, he said one thought was bouncing around in his head: "More work has to be done."

What some would call the most amazing game-ending TD in city history should not have counted. After a 35-yard field-goal attempt by King's Darrell Archer was blocked, teammate Donavan Bowman picked up the ball and ran 14 yards to the end zone, lifting the visiting Cougars over West Philadelphia, 14-8. The play began at the 18, facing Locust Street. Blocked kicks recovered by the offense beyond the line of scrimmage cannot be advanced. PIAA rules do not allow for protests . . . At 4-1, Dougherty already owns more wins than it posted in 11 of the 12 last seasons . . . If you miss Sunday football, O'Hara will host Roman this week, 1 p.m., at Springfield Delco . . .

After returning a fumble for a 77-yard TD vs. Wood, West Catholic linebacker Anthony McDonnaugh turned toward someone in the stands and roared, "You wanted one!? I got you one!" . . .
