Ted Silary: No business like toe business for Neumann-Goretti's Huff
Will Huff's right instep is no longer feeling neglected.
After getting to perform only punting duties in Neumann-Goretti's first three games, all shutout losses, the 6-2, 190-pound senior hammered two field goals and went 4-for-4 on PAT in a 34-7, nonleague win over Prep Charter.
"We did set up for a field goal against McDevitt," Huff said, thinking back to Week 3, "but it was wet and the snap was bad and we had to go with a 'Fire!' call. Mark Stinsman, my holder, threw a pass. Almost went for a touchdown, too. They barely deflected it.
"I understand why Mr. [Rich] Carfagno [first-year coach] likes to go for touchdowns, but I always mention to him, 'If you want to go for a field goal, I'll definitely hit it.' "
Huff, also a basketball player, doubles during the fall as the soccer team's center midfielder. The football/soccer practice sites are in different locales, so things are hectic.
"If they're gone by the time I get to football, I'll just kick and punt some balls on my own," he said. "Both coaches are good with the situation. I make things mutual."
Though Huff has been playing soccer for 10 years, he says it's "just a pastime" and that he wants to earn a scholarship for kicking and punting. His long-snappers are Stanley "Buddy" Visack (kicks) and Shane Thomas (punts). Huff's punts definitely have the sound (pow! he averages roughly 40 yards) and he attended several combines over the summer.
"Every time our offense goes in the field, I start stretching or doing calisthenics, trying to get ready for whatever it's going to be," he said. "I guess I'm better at punting. I've done that so much, with a lot of practice time, it's second nature."
SJ Prep coach Gil Brooks, on the fact that top rusher Garrett Compton suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and sprained medial collateral ligament in Saturday's win over La Salle: "That is a big loss from a player perspective, but an even bigger loss from a leadership perspective" . . . Judge junior Tony Smith has thrown for at least one TD in 14 of his 17 career appearances. Totals so far: 20 TDs and 2,144 yards . . . West Catholic has already punted more times this season (14 in four games) than it did in all of 2008 (12 in 16) . . . In a 42-7 loss to West, Carroll's Chris Shuster was asked to attempt just two passes. Both fell incomplete . . . Edison twice sustained a drive vs. King by recovering fumbles on botched punt returns. Joaquin Melendez did so at King's 37, then Tim Torres followed suit at the 9. Two plays later, Luis Ortiz fumbled and King's James Colburne recovered . . . Is this the coolest name in city grid history? Bok has a junior named Maurice T-Toe . . .
After making a particularly hard hit vs. Imhotep, Bok's Khalil Neal yelled, "I'm a madman!" Then, when an Imhotep assistant yelled out to the offense that only 4 yards were needed for a first down, Neal blurted, "You're not getting it!" . . . In that same game, with wind not a factor, lefty Walravens Daniel (speaking of cool names) blasted the opening kickoff into the end zone . . . As Malvern played at Frankford, retired coaching legend Gaspare "Gamp" Pellegrini worked the headphones at the top of the stands for his son and successor, Kevin . . . After University City's Tariq "Pop Tart" Gordon lost a rushing TD at Olney to a very late flag, coach Lou Williams yelped at the refs, "How do you call a TD back when the man is already on Duncannon Avenue?!" . . . According to Penn's roster, only seven of its players actually attend that school. The Lions have a cooperative agreement with Elverson Military and Parkway while charter schools supply another handful . . . Fourteen guys have already caught passes for Haverford School. Temple-bound Wyatt Benson, a fullback, leads with six receptions.
