Phil Jasner joined the staff of the Philadelphia Daily News in 1972. He has covered the 76ers and the NBA on a full-time basis since 1981. Jasner is a past president of the Professional Basketball Writers Association and the Philadelphia College Basketball Writers Association. He was the Pennsylvania Sports Writer of the Year for 1999, and was presented the 2004 Curt Gowdy Media Award, presented by the Naismith Basketball Hall Of Fame for outstanding contributions to the sport during his career; he was a finalist for the award in 2001, when he also received a lifetime achievement award from the Professional Basketball Writers Association during the NBA Finals. Along the way, he has covered high school sports, the Philadelphia Big 5, the Eagles and the NFL, the World Football League, the North American Soccer League and what was then the Major Indoor Soccer League. He is a proud graduate of Temple University, and spent his early professional days at the Pottstown (Pa.) Mercury, Montgomery Newspapers (Fort Washington, Pa.), the Norristown (Pa.) Times-Herald and the Trentonian.

NONE OF THEM wanted to say what was inside them after the fact. The bonds were too strong. The life experiences were too intertwined. There they were, roughly a month ago, former Penn coaches Bob Weinhauer and Jack McCloskey, onetime Penn assistant Bob Staak and former Temple coach Don Casey in Jupiter, Fla., visiting with Chuck Daly. They talked, they laughed, they reminisced.

PREMISE: ANDRE Miller is the most important player on the 76ers' roster. Discussion: That is true to a point, because Miller is not only crafty and capable, he is the only point guard on the roster. He is also, for the first time in his career, a free agent. He probably has only one more contract to sign during his career, and he must be certain the situation is as right as the money.

GO AHEAD, admit it: You don't like Samuel Dalembert. You think he doesn't have good basketball instincts. You think he makes too many mistakes. You think he's overpaid, that the 76ers need to upgrade his position in the offseason.
HOW MANY MORE hills, Tony DiLeo was asked, can the 76ers climb? "Two," the coach replied yesterday, speaking to a handful of reporters before the team left for Orlando and tonight's Game 5 of what has become an excruciating first-round playoff series.
I DON'T KNOW what Ed Stefanski has in mind. I haven't been around him long enough to know exactly how he thinks in terms of coaches.
