AROUND TOWN
UNH 28, Villanova 24
Well, did you really think the Wildcats were going to run through that schedule unscathed?
'Nova (5-1, 2-1 CAA) was ranked No. 2 in FCS, New Hampshire (5-0, 2-0) No. 5. It was the 'Cats first game outside the Philly area.
Villanova trailed 22-7 in the second quarter. But the lead was down to five at intermission. Matt Sczcur's second TD, on a 58-yard run, put 'Nova ahead by two with 11 minutes left in the third period. But Nick Yako would miss a 23-yard field goal, then UNH's Tom Manning made one from 35 with 11:49 remaining. Eight minutes later he hit another, this time from 22. And Villanova never threatened on its final two possessions.
At least the 'Cats became the first team to score more than 16 against the other Wildcats.
Now they go to defending national champion James Madison (2-3), which just lost at home to top-ranked Richmond, 21-17. JMU beat 'Nova twice last year, on a last-play Hail Mary on the Main Line and a late TD in Harrisonburg, Va., in a playoff quarterfinal.
Temple 24, Ball State 19
For the second straight week, the Owls (3-2, 3-0 MAC) did what they had to do against a winless opponent. This time they did it at home.
It's their first 3-2 start since 2000, and second in 23 years. In 2000, the Owls, then playing in the Big East, would finish 4-7; these Owls figure to do better. Ohio University (4-2, 2-0) is the only other team in the division that hasn't lost a conference game. This week the Owls host Army (3-3).
They haven't won four in a row since 1985; that team also ended up 4-7.
True freshman Bernard Pierce (125 yards on 26 carries, two scores) reached triple figures in rushing for the third consecutive game. Jaiquawn Jarrett had two interceptions, a fumble recovery and a team-best nine tackles.
The Cardinals (0-6, 0-2) took a 13-10 lead early in the third quarter, when they recovered a bad snap on a punt in the end zone. But Temple responded with a TD drive, and added another late in the fourth period. Ball State scored on the game's last play.
The Owls overcame another fumbled snap on a punt, a penalty that nullified a Pierce TD run and two missed field goals, one of which was blocked.
