Mike Kern: College Football Wrap

Players of the Weekend

National

Erik Folk kicked a 22-yard field goal, his third of the game in three tries, with 3 seconds left to give Washington a 16-13 win over visiting Southern Cal. The sophomore's career-long 46-yarder early in the fourth quarter had also put the Huskies up by three.

Local

Junior Justin Decristofaro (Father Judge) went 16-for-31 for 234 yards and two touchdowns as Ursinus beat Juniata, 31-0. He also ran for a score.

Around Town

Villanova 14, Penn 3

The Wildcats, ranked second in Division I-AA (or Football Championship Subdivision, or whatever you prefer calling it), is off to its first 3-0 start since 2003, when they finished 7-4. They've beaten the Quakers, who were playing their season opener, in all seven meetings since the series resumed in 1999.

This one didn't come down to the last snap, as it had in 3 of the previous 4 years.

At Franklin Field, Matt Szczur took the opening kickoff 87 yards to the house. Early in the second quarter, Andrew Samson booted a 22-yard field goal. He later had another blocked. Late in the third quarter, backup quarterback Antwon Young found Brandyn Harvey in the corner of the end zone from 5 yards out.

Young, a fifth-year senior who, as he often does, played two series, lost the starting job to Chris Whitney in an overtime win over Penn last season. Young threw for 21 yards and led the Wildcats with 36 yards rushing on four carries. Whitney passed for 38. But don't expect any controversy on the Main Line. At least not for now.

Penn QB Keiffer Garton, in only his fourth start, went 19-for-27 for 185 yards. He was sacked six times.

Penn is at Lafayette this week. Villanova hosts Northeastern in a Colonial Athletic Association opener.

It's the first time since 2002 that Penn was held to three points. In the 1999 game, the Quakers scored six.

Penn State 31, Temple 6

The Owls (0-2), in Happy Valley, at least scored twice as many points as they had in Al Golden's first three games against his alma mater.

This week Temple hosts Buffalo (1-2), which is coming off a 23-17 loss at Central Florida (2-1), in a Mid-American Conference opener.

The last time the Bulls were here, in 2007, they won 42-7 as slight underdogs, the only time I ever put the Owls in the Fraud Five.

Last year, of course, the Owls lost up there, 30-28, on a 35-yard pass on the last play. In Golden's first game, 3 years ago, Buffalo won at home in OT, 9-3.
