Gary Thompson: Vaughn a winner at the box office
His "Couples Retreat" just nudged past the $100 million mark, making it the fifth Vaughn headliner to reach that milestone (he's had supporting roles in blockbusters like "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" and "The Lost World").
One of his unlikely hits, "Four Christmases," is out on DVD this week, featuring Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon as a troubled couple visiting squabbling in-laws over the holidays. It's priced at $28, and hasn't much in the way of special features.
The special edition ($35) of Judd Apatow's "Funny People," on the other hand, has an unbelievable array of extras. The movie itself is overlong and erratic, but Apatow has packed it with unusual bonus stuff - highlights from his high school radio show, crank phones calls with Adam Sandler, an obscure appearance by Apatow and Sandler on a Bill Maher show called "The Midnight Hour," and an on-the-road documentary starring "Funny People" supporting player Aziz Ansari. There are more documentaries, and more commentary, making this one an interesting title for Apatow fans.
