Gary Thompson: 'Monsters' take on the indies
I've got my money on "Monsters vs Aliens," arriving on DVD in two forms. The $30 version gives you the movie plus a few special features, the $38 version gives you another animated featurette about Bob the Blob, voiced by Seth Rogen.
As for the quirky comedies (all in the $20 range), I don't know what accounts for the sudden influx. Some quirk in the system?
The best-reviewed was "Away We Go" with Jonathan Krasinski and Maya Rudolf as a young couple expecting a child and looking for a place to put down roots. They go on a whirlwind tour, meet dozens of supporting actors directed to chew as much scenery as possible.
Even quirkier was "The Brothers Bloom," featuring Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo as con men in an intricately layered story of multiple scams, but the only upshot is that you'll do anything to knock that stupid black hat off Ruffalo's head.
Finally, there's "Management," and believe it or not it's a comedy version of "Psycho," featuring Steve Zahn as a motel employee who stalks and harasses her. He doesn't kill her, though, and she feels sorry for him and they become a couple. From there, it gets weird.
