Gary Thompson: Cruise targets Hitler in 'Valkyrie'
Tom Cruise as a Nazi - the very idea of it kept people away from "Valkyrie," in which he plays an officer who plots to kill Hitler.
But Bryan Singer's thriller is not half-bad. Cruise is his usual earnest self, and he's helped by a cast of able British actors - Kenneth Branagh, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Eddie Izzard.
The Britishness of the Germans becomes something of a joke, but at least it's a consistent one, and the fast-moving movie's well-oiled thriller mechanics eventually carries the day.
The two-disc DVD lists for $29.99. Its special features include commentary from Cruise, Singer, and writer Chris McQuarrie. There is a making-of documentary, and a documentary about the actual plot to kill Hitler on which "Valkyrie" is based. *
