Deb Woodell grew up reading the Daily News and fulfilled a lifelong dream when she began working on the sports copydesk in 1989. She has written about lesbian and gay issues here since January 1996, addressing such subjects as religion, politics, same-sex marriage, literature, education and popular culture. A journalism graduate of Glassboro State College (now Rowan University), she received a Distinguished Alumni award in 1998. She is an adjunct professor of copy editing at her alma mater, where, in furthering her longtime interest in planning issues, she also is a student in the geography department's certification program in Cartography/Geographic Information Systems.
