Dave Davies has covered government and politics in Philadelphia for the past twenty years. He is senior writer for the Philadelphia Daily News, where he has worked since 1990. He is also a fill-in host for National Public Radio's Fresh Air, and WHYY's Radio Times. Before joining the Daily News, Dave was city hall bureau chief for KYW News Radio, and city hall correspondent for WHYY-FM. He was also a founding editor of Community Focus, a weekly newspaper in Philadelphia's Kensington and Port Richmond areas. He's also worked as a teacher, a cab driver and a welder. He was born and raised in Texas, and graduated from the University of Texas in 1975. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife, Marna Sternbach. They have two grown children.
AS THE DECADE turns, and I write my last column for the Daily News, I have to shine a light on the most remarkable thing I've seen in 25 years of covering city politics: at last, the appearance of a watchdog that isn't afraid to bite.
WHEN MAYOR Nutter's Task Force on Ethics and Campaign Finance Reform issued its report yesterday, I was happy to see that one of its first recommendations was to fix something I've written about for two years now.
-
SEEMS LIKE everybody is smacking Mayor Nutter around lately, asking just what on earth has he done with two years in office.
-
ALL RIGHT, from now on, the description of the Pennsylvania Legislature in any encyclopedia should read: "the place where things have been so screwed up for so long that they seem normal."
- Breakups can be crazy. Is this one?RUPTURED marriages can lead to nasty things: bitter arguments, personal threats, physical violence. Men and women involved often turn to cops and the courts for protection and for justice, generating thousands of lawsuits, protection orders and criminal charges every year.
