Dan Gross: Jill Scott and her fiance split

SOULFUL SONGBIRD Jill Scott

and her drummer, Lil' John Roberts, who welcomed their son into the world two months ago, have broken off their engagement and are no longer together.

Scott, who also stars in HBO's new series, "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency," tells Essence magazine she's not sure if the split from Roberts was related to having the baby, Jett Hamilton Roberts, but she says she and her ex "love our son and we are co-parenting and working on being friends."

Roberts, who like Scott is Philly-raised, has toured with Janet Jackson's band.

Roots playing Parkway, Borgata

The Roots, who just were added to the bill of the Sheryl Crow July 4 Welcome America! concert on the Parkway, will also be in residence at Atlantic City's Borgata. The Philadelphia hip-hop heroes, now the house band on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," will perform July 24 at the Borgata's 1,000- seat Music Box theater, with a special guest to be announced. After the show, drummer Questlove will spin at the Borgata's mixx nightclub. Tix are $49.50 and on sale Saturday.

DJ AM helps open Dusk in A.C.

Rittenhouse Square-raised Adam Gold

stein, better known as DJ AM, is a strategic partner and musical director of Dusk at Caesars in Atlantic City. On Friday the club is holding a private party but opens to the public with DJ AM spinning on July 4.

Eric Millstein, former nightlife coordinator at the Borgata, where DJ AM often performed, left the Borgata in September and joined marketing group Red Stripe Plane Group to launch Dusk. The club will be open Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. He expects athletes and celebrities to show up, but Dusk will not hire celebs to host parties. It'll be the only A.C. spot where AM spins. Many of the club's DJs will be on his Deckstar label.

Author Weiner helps Philadelphia Spells

Queen Village author Jennifer Weiner, whose seventh novel, "BFF," is out next month, has pledged a generous three-year gift to Philadelphia Spells, a writing center for kids. Weiner did not want to divulge how much she gave, but since she's listed as a sponsor on the group's Website (phillyspells.org), it's at least $15,000. The nonprofit is hoping to raise $500,000 to open a storefront writing center around HeadHouse Square or the South Street area next year.

Metrocorp cuts in Philly, Boston

Boston magazine has named Andrew

Putz, former senior editor at Philadelphia

magazine, as editor. Both are owned by Metrocorp, which Monday laid off at least six people in Boston, including editor James Burnett. Putz, 35, left Philadelphia in 2006 to edit Minnesota Monthly mag. Philly mag staffers will take five unpaid furlough days by the end of 2009, and the mag will now be thinner and printed on cheaper paper.

Papa's prostate run raises $181K

Sunday's Run 4 Your Life, the Prostate Health International race, raised more than $181,000 for prostate-cancer charities. 6ABC sports director Gary Papa, who died Friday after a five-year battle with the disease, co-chaired the event with John Dougherty, business manager from electricians union Local 98. 6ABC's team, led by sportscaster Jamie Apody, brought in the most money, with $17,000.

The top male finisher was Michael McKeenan (15:21), and the female winner was Claire Duncan (17:17). As for Papa, 6ABC says there is no word yet on a public memorial service. His burial is private.

Local faces on reality shows

Chadds Ford native Melinda Meaney is among contestants on Fox's "Hell's Kitchen," premiering July 21. Meaney, 38, works in the area as a private chef. The contestants must impress the crass, craggy Gordon Ramsay to win a head-chef position at a Canadian restaurant, Araxi.

* Nathan Galiu, 25, who earned a bachelor's in interior design from Drexel's Antoinette Westphal College, will be on the fourth season of "Design Star," on HGTV, starting July 19. He's from Palm Beach.
