Dan Gross: '60s radicals to read here
The couple, authors of "Race Coarse: Against White Supremacy," a collection of essays about structural racism in the criminal-justice system, politics and education, appear at 7 at the Arch Street United Methodist Church (Broad & Arch).
Ayers, Dohrn and and other members of the Weather Underground bombed various government buildings in the '60s and '70s. Obama and Ayers, now a University of Illinois professor, served on a nonprofit foundation's board together, and Ayers once hosted a party for Obama.
Dohrn is the director of the Children and Family Law Justice Center and a professor at Northwestern University School of Law.
Out and about
Ex-Tampa Bay defenseman Warren Sapp was a hit with the women dining at Union Trust (717 Chestnut) late Tuesday night, when he came in with a friend. The Super Bowl champ even twirled a few women around after they talked to him about his time on "Dancing with the Stars." Sapp, who went for a bone-in filet at the steakhouse, was in the area doing work for NFL Films.
* Joel McHale, host of E!'s "The Soup," seemed transfixed by a Kitty Glitter slot machine at the Borgata Sunday night, after his sold-out comedy show at the Music Box Theater. Perhaps the comedian, who was heading to the mur.mur nightclub, thought the Kitty Glitter machine resembled Spaghetti Cat, a pasta-eating feline whom McHale has popularized on "The Soup."
* Phillies skipper Charlie Manuel and
former mayoral candidate Sam Katz seemed an odd pair lunching yesterday at the Palm (200 S. Broad), where Manuel, who has been slimming down of late, had only a Caesar salad. Not so odd a union, as Katz was interviewing Manuel for his Philadelphia magazine feature, Sam's Power Lunch.
Magazine moves . . .
Philly mag editor Larry Platt now also oversees editorial at Boston magazine, also published by Metrocorp.
* Philadelphia Style editor-in-chief Sarah
Schaffer has been promoted and now oversees Capitol File magazine, which covers the Washington area. Like Style, Capitol File is published by Niche Media.
Rev. Smerconish?
Michael Smerconish is threatening to become a minister so the Big Talker 1210 morning host can officiate at the wedding of his technical producer, Greg Stocker, 29, and fiancee Stephanie Paey, 24, a marketing director at Orbit FR, in Hatboro. Smerconish, who also writes a column for the Daily News and Inquirer, is also weighing in on Stocker's bachelor party, telling executive producer TC Scornavacchi, a female, that she can attend only if she pops out of a cake. Smerconish hopes the couple wed at the Irish Pub (20th & Walnut).
Charitably minded
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98 has been involved for several eyars with the annual Run 4 Your Life fundraiser for prostate cancer, but many at the union are more involved this year than in the past. Local 98's political director, Bob Henon, was diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year. Through early detection and treatment, Henon's doing well.
But today a billboard goes up overlooking the westbound lanes of the Vine Expressway promoting Run 4 Your Life, on Father's Day, June 21, along Martin Luther King Drive. "Prostate Cancer Runs in the Family. Help Us Run Down a Cure," reads the sign on which Henon poses with his father, Robert Sr., also a prostate-cancer survivor. The annual run/walk is co-chaired by Local 98 boss John Dougherty and 6ABC's Gary Papa, who has been battling prostate cancer for several years and whose health has kept him off the air a fair amount recently. To register for the run, visit run4yourlife.org.
* Speaking of charity runs, Mayor Nut-
ter and Fox 29's John Bolaris are still seeking more runners for the Badges of Honor 5K Run on June 6, which will benefit the Survivor's Fund that aids families of fallen police officers, firefighters and corrections officers. Bolaris came up with the idea following the slaying of Officer John Pawlowski, and the city quickly got on board. Check-in and registration is from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at 11th & Pattison. The entry fee is $27.50 and runners can register at imATHLETE.com. *
