Bob Cooney

Bob Cooney has been at the Daily News for almost 20 years, working in the sports department the past 12 years. He has covered just about everything for the sports department, but mostly college basketball, where he has been the La Salle beat writer for the past six seasons.

He grew up in South Jersey and has always enjoyed keeping up with South Jersey sports. “Talking with and getting to know high school athletes, and telling their stories, is something I am looking forward to,” he said.

HE IS ALL of 19 years old, the youngest player in the NBA. He is making an ungodly amount of money for someone his age - $1,514,280 - yet he is still required to stop and pick up doughnuts for his teammates. He is lonely at times, bored, too, and missing many things he loved on the other side of the country.

IT'S EIGHT GAMES into the season, hardly enough time to have a full grasp on this 76ers team. We all know it has a new coach, a general manager about to celebrate only his second anniversary with the team, and a roster devoid of an upper-echelon player.

THERE'S A NEW offense in town, and the head coach talked at length about it yesterday after a luncheon, and even used media members to demonstrate how it will work.
IT WAS A MOVE a long time in the waiting for Washington Township coach Mark Wechter. Now, he's able to let the dogs out.
IT DIDN'T MATTER that the opposition was considered by many as the best in South Jersey and ranked as high as third in the state. All coach Durwin Pearson wanted his Camden High football players to do was win the first game.
THE QUARTERBACK has already committed to play for the University of Wisconsin. The tight end, who doubles as the team's defensive end, could play for any college. And the 6-7 wide receiver just might be the best athlete on the team.
THE HITTING has been timely, if not overpowering. The pitching has been outstanding, and today, Shawnee (18-6) is on the verge of capturing the Group 3 state championship when it travels to Toms River East to face JFK-Iselin.
