WITH THE interminable NASCAR season winding down, and Jimmie Johnson about to be crowned King James IV, please consider some suggestions to improve NASCAR:

When this racing season began, Ryan Newman didn't know what to expect. He was with a new team, co-owned by fellow Hoosier Tony Stewart. Traditionally, new teams in the Sprint Cup Series struggle.
WELCOME TO NASCAR's Nightmare. Just halfway through the 10-race Chase for the Championship, Jimmie Johnson appears to have his fourth consecutive championship locked up. Drama, exit stage right. The Chase is over.
A COUPLE OF weeks ago, after another Jimmie Johnson column lead, I promised our sports desk I wouldn't write about the three-time reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup champion every week.
CONSIDERING what is at stake, you'd think the 12 crew chiefs in the Chase for the Championship would be enduring sleepless nights and gulping Maalox in large quantities.
MAYBE WE ARE getting carried away with Jimmie Johnson's dominating performance Sunday at Dover. After two races, Mark Martin still leads the Chase for the Championship by 10 points.
Let's put to rest the idea that Mark Martin is just happy to be back as a full-time Sprint Cup racer. The geezer is going for his first Chase championship.
Six of the dozen drivers beginning pursuit of NASCAR's Chase for the Championship on Sunday weren't in the playoff-on-wheels last year. When these six look around, they'll see four former Sprint Cup champions in the Chase. Talk about intimidation . . .
ONE RACE to go to settle the 12-driver NASCAR Chase for the Championship field. Brian Vickers trails 12th-place driver Matt Kenseth by only 20 points; Kyle Busch is 37 points behind Kenseth.
IF HE WERE NOT an experienced racer, Matt Kenseth could find that the next two Sprint Cup races are potent perspiration producers.
WHEN FRANK KERR began his NASCAR career, he never thought he'd have to understand Australian. Kerr, from Bensalem, Pa., is the crew chief for the No. 47 Toyota in the Sprint Cup Series, driven by Australian Marcus Ambrose. His last three Cup finishes include a second (at Watkins Glen) and third (at Bristol).
AND WE THOUGHT Kyle Busch was busy, racing in NASCAR's top three series. Starting yesterday at Bristol Motor Speedway, Ryan Newman was scheduled to race in four series at the eastern Tennessee track. He competed in the Whelen Modified Tour and Camping World truck races yesterday and last night. Tomorrow night, he'll be in the Nationwide race, and Saturday night, it's the Sprint Cup.
