Brady cancels request for processing center probe

Yesterday, U.S. Rep. Robert Brady rescinded his request for the Government Accounting Office to investigate the Postal Service processing plant in Southwest Philadelphia. The Postal Service's new regional director, Jim Gallagher, assured Brady that mail problems at the plant would be resolved, said Brady spokeswoman Karen Warrington.

"They are old friends," she added.

In a Dec. 15 letter, Brady told Gene Dodaro, acting U.S. comptroller general, that "Gallagher has assured me that he will not only conduct a thorough and exhaustive investigation but he will institute changes to correct serious problems at the facility."

In a Dec. 5 letter to Dodaro, Brady said he was aware of an investigation by the Postal Service's Office of Inspector General, "but the level of concern being raised" requires the GAO to investigate. *
