Piazza murders unravel with more arrests
The suspected mastermind of the gruesome double homicide of party promoter Rian Thal and Timothy Gilmore has surrendered to police. At about 7:40 p.m. Monday, Will "Pooh" Hook, 40, also known as James Wilson and Keith Epps, strode into police headquarters at 8th and Race streets to turn himself in. In a news conference on Friday, July 10, Capt. James Clark of the city's homicide unit announced Hook was believed to be the man who planned the June 27 murders at the Piazza at Schmidts, 2nd Street and Germantown Avenue in Northern Liberties. Police said Hook might have had a romantic relationship with a woman police believe let the killers into the Navona building where Thal, 34, and Gilmore, 40, were gunned down. That woman, Kayota Jones, 25, is a second-floor resident of the Navona building. She was arrested on July 2. Last week, she was charged with murder, conspiracy, burglary, criminal trespass and related offenses. On Friday, Clark said detectives had determined the slayings were the result of a robbery gone awry. According to the captain, Hook, whose last known address was on the 2600 block of North Sartain St. in North Philly, along with Robert Keith, 29, of the 5300 block of North 13th St. in Fern Rock, will be charged with burglary and related charges. Police said the two men attempted to break into what they had thought was Thal's apartment at around 4 a.m. on the day of the murders. But, they headed to the wrong floor and broke instead into an apartment that was vacant. The men left that morning empty handed. Keith was apprehended last week. Neither Hook or Keith returned later in the day, but the police captain said that law enforcement officials believe the failed burglary spurred the shootings. Clark said that all of the individuals involved in this investigation are known by police to have histories of involvement in drug-related activities. Thal was known to have been a "party promoter," gathering crowds to happening night spots like Plush Nightclub, located not far from Northern Liberties, at 338 N. 8th Street. Police believe Thal had longtime connections to the city's drug underworld. She was shot twice in the head and neck. They also suspect Gilmore, a former firefighter from Winchester, Ohio, might have been using his trucking business to transport illegal drugs. According to Clark, when Hook and Keith originally visited the building, they mistakenly kicked the door in of an empty apartment on the sixth floor, one floor below where Thal's apartment was located. "(Hook) set all of these events in motion," said Clark. "They kicked in the wrong door on the sixth floor. What we know is that it was set up as a robbery, but they kicked in the wrong door." Also, during the Friday afternoon press conference, Clark announced the name of one of the suspected murderers. Donnell Murchison, 32, of the 6500 block of Limekiln Pike, near Stenton Avenue, has been named by police as the first killer to have entered the building prior to the murders.
