Man shoots himself at The Fire on Halloween night
Halloween night took a nightmarish turn at The Fire in Northern Liberties after a patron shot himself in the head just before 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1. The incident sent costumed patrons hysterically running from the bar in an attempt summon paramedics from the Philadelphia Fire Department's Engine 29, located next door at the intersection of Fourth Street and Girard Avenue. As distraught customers - there for the Phillies' World Series Game 3 and a night packed with live bands - gathered outside on Girard Avenue, several police cars from the 26th District arrived. Inside, the victim could be seen sprawled on the floor of the bar near the Girard Avenue entrance. An ambulance later removed the 34-year-old man, who sources said was the boyfriend of a part time bartender. Reports also stated that the individual briefly argued with the bartender before shooting himself. "An individual who was not a regular patron at The Fire made a tragic attempt on his life near closing on Saturday night. No one else was harmed. Out of respect for his family, we have no further comment," management said in statement released Monday. Officer Christine O'Brien, of the Police Public Affairs unit, said police responded to a call regarding gunshot at 1:44 a.m. on Nov. 1. The victim, whose name was not released, was rushed to the nearby Hahnemann University hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Unconfirmed reports from the police said the man died from his injuries on Tuesday afternoon. Dan McShane, manager at The Fire, described the incident as a "personal tragedy," and noted it was a highly isolated incident. "We've never had as much as fist fight here," said McShane. He said his thoughts are with the victim's family and his staff. The bar, a gritty but popular music venue with local craft beer and live shows throughout the week, remained open the following day.
