Romain House is featured on HGTV
A renovated property in Frankford that houses military veterans will be featured next week in a special episode on HGTV. The cable television network ran a contest earlier this year in conjunction with Rebuilding Together, a national non-profit group that seeks to prevent homelessness by rehabilitating homes. HGTV invited eight cities, including Philadelphia, to participate and asked their Rebuilding Together chapters to identify community veterans' homes in need of rehabilitation. The Philadelphia chapter nominated Romain House, at 4245 Romain St. The property is owned by the Pennsylvania American Legion Housing for Homeless Veterans Corp. and has been serving veterans in transition since 1994. The public voted on the HGTV Web site and chose the entries for Philadelphia and St. Louis. The local renovations were completed in May and June, thanks to about 300 workers. Carpenter Carter Oosterhouse, an HGTV star, performed some of the work, along with Rebuilding Together Philadelphia volunteers and members of the local Building and Construction Trades Council. HGTV personality Monica Pedersen put up some of the final decorations on June 28, the final day of filming. Change the World: American Heroes will be shown on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 8 p.m. It will be rebroadcast on Thursday, Nov. 12, at 3 a.m. The one-hour episode will feature stories on both the Philadelphia and St. Louis projects. In St. Louis, the show will look at a formerly abandoned property that has been renovated to house three veterans. Featured prominently in the show is then-Rams linebacker Will Witherspoon, who has since been traded to the Eagles. Romain House also accommodates three veterans. The budget was $45,000, with HGTV contributing $40,000 and Comcast adding $5,000. Besides filming at Romain House, the crew visited Independence National Historic Park, the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service and Education Center and Father Judge High School. Father Judge has a memorial for the 27 graduates it lost in the Vietnam War.
