Politicians visit Bustleton civic meeting
By Diane Prokop Times Staff Writer The Greater Bustleton Civic League has a lot of Phillies fans. The organization even sponsors an annual trek to the ballpark. Still, they had a full house for last week's civic group meeting that ran a full 90 minutes, despite the fact that the Phils were facing the New York Yankees on television in the first game of the World Series. City controller candidates Alan Butkovitz (Democrat) and Al Schmidt (Republican) were on hand to ask for support in Tuesday's election, as were Democratic district attorney candidate Seth Williams, and Adam Beloff, a Democrat running for a seat on Common Pleas Court. Also on hand were City Councilman Frank Rizzo (R-at large) and aides to City Councilman Brian O'Neill (R-10th dist.), state Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-170th dist.), state Sen. Mike Stack (D-5th dist.) and City Councilwoman Maria Qui–ones-Sanchez (D-7th dist.). In other business, Kirk Weidemer told residents about his client's plans to open a beer distributorship at Red Lion and Verree roads. Civic league members told the attorney about their concerns regarding high traffic and accidents. According to GBCL president Bernice Hill, Weidemer said he'd bring the issues to the attention of his client and return for a formal presentation asking for the group's vote of support. The next GBCL meeting will be held Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m., at the American Heritage Federal Credit Union, 2060 Red Lion Road. The civic group usually meets on the fourth Wednesday of every month, but it will be held on the third Wednesday in November due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
