Letters to the editor Oct. 29, 2009
Why aren't lawyers making a case of CLIP? Many of the past issues of the Northeast Times contain letters to the editor by people complaining that they were wrongly fined by CLIP, the Community Life Improvement Program. When a certain element within the Philadelphia Police Department took umbrage with mere words on a Web site, a lawyer stepped forward and filed a class-action lawsuit, which brought down the Web site. Where is the legal profession with regard to the transgressions of CLIP? Is it because of skin color? That's why there are so many bad jokes about the legal profession. Every year, 300 to 400 people are killed on the streets of Philadelphia. I fail to see how the efforts of CLIP will prevent any of those murders. Steven P. Tengood Castor Gardens Good advice on watching TV without cable Three cheers for Richard Cohen for the brilliant solution on how to avoid the expense of cable TV. (How to make the best of the analog TV fiasco, Oct. 1 letters). I have used the aluminum foil solution and it works! I also take pleasure in knowing I was not manipulated by the powers that be. Thank you, Richard. Irene Weiner Castor Gardens It's time to boot Rizzo and Kelly out of office Since our two Republican at-large city councilmen have signed up for the Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP), I am led to believe they have either forgotten or have taken for granted the purpose of their office. I'll remind them...it is to serve the public's trust. They are taking advantage of an opportunity provided by themselves and policed through their own self-interest. I would like to point out that Philadelphia succeeds not because of anything Frank Rizzo or Jack Kelly has done, it is successful because of the hard-working individuals who struggle every day to support their family - those who earn an honest living and are involved in the lives of their children. It is the responsibility of an elected official to represent the needs of Philadelphia families, neighbors and communities in building a brighter future where parents who hope, dream and pray for their children can prosper through education, attention, kindness, affection and love. Those hoping for a safer neighborhood and a better future have been disappointed long enough. Frank Rizzo and Jack Kelly through their legislative failure have not represented the best interest of the families of Philadelphia and in 2011 we can grade them with our own term limit by booting two parts of an underperforming status quo.
