Frankford rapist gets long prison sentence

By William Kenny

Times Staff Writer

A Frankford rapist who attacked three women in his neighborhood in a five-day span in August 2008 was ordered Friday to spend 40 to 80 years in state prison.

Dorrell Shaw, 27, of the 5200 block of Marlowe St., grabbed two women off of the street at gunpoint and invaded the home of a third during a spree that "terrorized an entire community," said Common Pleas Court Judge Glenn Bronson in issuing the sentence.

Shaw was charged or suspected in at least three other similar sexual assaults that summer but was not convicted of those crimes.

Speaking to the news media after testifying in court, one of Shaw's victims said that she is doing OK and that she's glad authorities identified and arrested Shaw before he killed someone.

"Every case got worse and worse," said the victim, who was 21 at the time she was raped.

"And being (that) my case was mostly the first case, then that is what I had to worry about. So I am not completely worried about myself. I am more worried about everybody else. I don't want somebody to get murdered by somebody who should be in jail."

Shaw attacked the woman on Aug. 12, 2008. She had just parked her car on the 1600 block of Wakeling St. at about 6 a.m. when Shaw confronted her with a silver handgun.

Shaw demanded valuables from the woman before forcing her into her car and raping her. Shaw stole cash and a mobile phone, then fled.

Two days later, at about 10 p.m., Shaw pulled a gun on a 16-year-old girl near the Margaret-Orthodox station of the Market-Frankford El. He forced her into an alley on the 4700 block of Darrah St., where he raped her and stole her money.

On Aug. 16, 2008, at about 5 a.m., Shaw climbed through the window of a home on the 1600 block of Dyre St. and raped a 37-year-old female resident at gunpoint, then stole her identification and mobile phone. The victim's children were upstairs at the time.

Two attempted rapes were reported in the neighborhood on Aug. 18, 2008, as police detectives canvassed the area for information leading to a culprit. Eventually, they identified Shaw as a suspect.

An attorney accompanied Shaw as he surrendered to police on Aug. 19, 2008. The suspect was also wanted on an unrelated bench warrant at the time. He voluntarily submitted a DNA sample for testing. Investigators linked Shaw to the Aug. 16 case through the sample.

At the time, he was charged in four cases, including one of the attempted rapes involving an 18-year-old woman on the 1200 block of Wakeling St.

Authorities also suspected him in the second attempted rape involving a 29-year-old woman near Frankford Avenue and Dyre Street, as well as a June 11, 2008, knifepoint rape of a 16-year-old girl on the 1100 block of Adams Ave.

Shaw eventually pleaded guilty on July 20 to multiple counts of rape, aggravated assault, robbery and related offenses, as well as a single burglary count related to the home invasion.
