Helping others see clearly at Philadelphia Eyeglass Labs

For more than a century, Philadelphia Eyeglass Labs has been the site to improve your sight.

The family-owned and -operated business offers glasses, lenses, frames, contact lenses, full eye refraction examinations and more, said Craig Messinger, owner of the Montgomeryville location.

The Messinger family has been providing exceptional eye care since 1888, said the optician.

“This is not your typical optical story,” he said. “I’m the fourth generation involved in this business; it goes back to my great-grandfather, Benjamin.”

Messinger’s grandfather, Peter, and father, Milton — both doctors — followed in Benjamin’s footsteps and the business grew from there; now, brothers, sons, uncles and cousins are involved.

Philadelphia Eyeglass Labs touts not only its wealth of experience, but also the personal service each patient receives.

“We’ve been around so long — now five generations — that our service is second to none,” said Messinger.

The business offers a vast assortment of eyewear.

“We have all designers and fashions, depending on your taste,” said the owner, including thousands of frames. “We handpick them all for each store.”

Philadelphia Eyeglass Labs also has prescription and non-prescription sunglasses, including polarized varieties.

The staff there is licensed and experienced, and also helpful in selecting the greatest look for customers.

“We pick out the glasses best suited for them — the size, the fit, the shape of their face,” he said. “It’s all part of the personalized service we’ve offered for generations.” The business also focuses on educating its customers.

“We try to let them know what we know, but we put it on their level so they understand what they’re getting,” said Messinger. “It’s to a point where they could take that knowledge elsewhere, but because we have very loyal customers, they end up coming here for years.”

Above all, customers are looking for value, he explained.

“That’s the most important thing — what you’re getting for your dollar,” he said. “We only give patients the best there is on the market.”

Most notable are Varilux and Crizal lenses, which Messinger calls the best antireflective and no-glare lenses out there.

Throughout his 37 years in the industry, the optician has seen several advancements in eyewear.

“Lenses have come a long, long way since I first got into the business,” he said. “They were plastic, then went to high-index lenses and now they’re thinner and lighter.” No-line bifocals also are popular these days, he said.

Unlike its competitors, Philadelphia Eyeglass Labs offers a free eye exam with the purchase of any of about 70 different frames.

“It’s a wide selection — different types, shapes, sizes and colors to choose from on the special,” said Messinger. “Most places you see on television don’t include an eye exam, but that’s how we separate ourselves.”

Employees of Philadelphia Eyeglass Labs can benefit from corporate packages either for safety eyewear or vision plans, including eye exams, glasses and lenses.
