The tales of two Lipsons
Penn State Brandywine will hold a double-feature lecture, focusing on leadership in business and organizations by two men of the same name in September.
Featured speakers in the leadership lecture series are David Lipson and David H. Lipson Jr., both successful businessmen in the community and Penn State alumni. The two Lipsons are not related to one another.
The event will be held Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. in the Tomezsko Building in room 103 on Penn State Brandywine’s campus. The session is free and open to the public.
Lecturer David Lipson is a current chairman and cofounder of Moda Technology Partners and Vita Food Products and was founder and chief executive officer of Integrated Systems Consulting Group, which fused with First Consulting Group.
Lipson has worked for over 40 years in the information technology field in marketing and administrative positions at companies such as IBM, Sungard, Dun and Bradstreet Computer Services and Digital Equipment Corporation.
Lipson earned awards from the Eastern Technology Council and was named CEO of the Year in 1997 and was awarded by Ernst & Young, LLP with the Greater Philadelphia Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1996.
He is a former Penn State Brandywine advisory board member and chairperson, a philanthropist to the college and is currently a member of the campus’ capital campaign committee.
Lipson is a lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association and will be honored by the association as an alumni fellow this year.
Speaker David H. Lipson Jr. is the president of Metro Corp. a company that publishes magazines in Philadelphia and Boston.
Metro Corp. produces publications such as Philadelphia Magazine, New England Travel, Wine and Spirits Quarterly, and Boston Magazine and has been the driving force behind the Best of Philly program and the Philadelphia Wine Festival.
Lipson Jr. has worked in business for over 30 years and started out his career in magazine publishing as an advertising executive in Boston and New York.
A lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association, he was honored by the association as an alumni fellow in 2008. He serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, and he is involved with the Philadelphia Zoo’s Corporate Leadership Council and the Boy Scouts of America.
Each lecturer will speak about his individual experiences as an industry leader. The Sept. 22 event is part of a three-lecture series presented by Penn State Brandywine’s business department this fall at the university. Two other upcoming lectures will target business issues, such as women in business and management development in October and November.
According to Penn State Brandywine director of marketing and university relations Helene Bludman, this year’s lecture series is the first in several years with a strictly business focus.
“The university focused on finding individuals who have had significant leadership experience in business, academic or nonprofit organizations and experience in entrepreneurial leadership,” she said.
According to Bludman, both Lipsons will talk about ways they led their organizations over the years, the effects of their leadership styles, their successes and stumbling blocks, what they’ve learned and what characteristics work best in developing oneself as a leader.
There will be a question and answer session following the approximately 90-minute presentation.
Bludman expects between 75 and 100 attendees ranging from students, faculty, staff, local business groups and organizations, as well as members of the community. For more information, visit the Web site at www.brandywine.psu.edu.
