Marple-Newtown H.S. celebrates spirit week
Marple-Newtown High School students are fortunate to learn in an environment where everyone is treated equally. The reason for this togetherness can be credited to several events and competitions student council offers. The week of Oct. 12, spirit week, was the start of a friendly competition between the various grades. This tradition has been practiced at the school for over 25 years.
Monday, Oct. 11, was “Dress in your Pajamas Day.” In addition, each grade was responsible for decorating a display case based on their class color. The freshman class color is gray, sophomores white, juniors orange and seniors black.
On Tuesday, “Pro Sports Gear Day” was the theme, which consisted of students wearing professional sports team clothing. Class officers from each grade also created a homecoming banner for the football game. As a school we participated in the “Tiger Olympics.” Throughout the day, each grade was excused from class for thirty minutes to participate in carnival-style games.
Wednesday was “College T-shirt Day” along with “Mascot Mania.” Marple-Newtown students took guesses at how many tiger-stuffed animals were in the main display case.
Thursday was “Business Attire Day.” Students wore professional outfits to school. Concluding the week, Friday was a “Color War,” followed by a pep rally. Each grade had to wear their class color to show their tiger pride.
Every grade received a score for each of the activities presented throughout the week, ranging from one to four, with four being the highest.
At the end of the week, the senior class had the highest score, winning the competition with 31 points. The junior class was close behind with a score of 29.
Student council president Sean Stipa commented on the win.
“Spirit week was a huge success. More students were involved and excited about the competition than I noticed last year,” he said. “It was nice getting another win for the senior class, even though it was much closer than expected.”
