Pajama party in Oxford Valley helps children in need

Pajama parties usually don’t take place in the middle of the day or in the middle of a mall. That is, unless it’s a Daytime Pajama Party thrown by Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania and Radio Disney.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, girls ages 5 to 17 are invited to a pajama party with a charitable twist. The girls don’t need to wear pajamas, just bring a new pair to the party for donation to a child in need.

“Radio Disney is partnering with other local organizations to distribute [the pajamas],” said Lorrie Klaric, vice president of membership services with Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania.

The pajamas will be distributed by the Pajama Program, a nonprofit organization that provides pajamas and books to children in need and children awaiting placement in a permanent home.

The charitable pajama party will also feature fun, more “typical” pajama party activities.

The Radio Disney entertainment team will be on-hand, supplying music, dancing and a trivia contest. Prizes, including a poster signed by “Camp Rock” star Demi Lovato, will be awarded.

The event will also serve as a recruitment event for the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania.
“We hope we can have a lot of new girls come out and participate,” said Klaric.

Klaric added that this is a unique recruitment event, one the Girl Scouts are excited to try out. This event is the first Girl Scout mall pajama party.

Another daytime pajama party is planned for Sept. 27 at Fairgrounds Square Mall in Reading.
“This is a result of a partnership with Radio Disney,” she said.

Radio Disney is broadcast on 640 A.M. in the Bucks County area.

The pajama party is not the first partnership between Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania and Radio Disney. Over the summer, the two organizations partnered at the Disney Block Party held at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. The organizations also held movie screenings of “Cheetah Girls One World” and coupled the movie with cultural awareness issues.

All the events fall in line with the three pillars of the Girl Scout Leadership experience — Discover, Connect and Take Action.

“The organization is very much focused on building leadership in young girls,” said Klaric.
The Pajama Party will give girls a chance to take action through the pajama donations.

“Girl Scouts is an organization very focused on community service,” said Klaric.

The service goes both ways, with young girls helping others and others helping the young scouts.

In fact, according to Klaric, Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania has over 15,000 volunteers working with scouts.
“We are very fortunate to have the strength of the volunteers in our community,” said Klaric.

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania covers Bucks, Philadelphia, Montgomery, Chester, Delaware, Berks, Lehigh, Northampton and Carbon counties and is comprised of almost 4,000 troops and about 40,000 Girl Scouts.

Klaric, a Newtown resident, first became involved with Girl Scouts as a mother.

“I have grown daughters who, when they were younger, I was their Girl Scout leader,” she said.

Now, during the main recruitment season for the Girl Scouts, Klaric hopes to see more girls get involved.
“Girl Scouts is a great organization,” she said.

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania and Radio Disney’s Daytime Pajama Party will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Oxford Valley Mall in Langhorne. Girls and their families are asked to bring a new pair of children’s pajamas. The pajamas will be sent to a needy child in the area. For more information, visit www.gsep.org.
