Furniture store intends its wares to last for generations

Transform the interior of your home with help from Hendrixson’s Furniture’s stunning pieces and superior design services.

The business, located in Furlong and Emmaus, offers quality furniture from many of America’s finest manufacturers, custom draperies, accessories and more to make over any room, said co-owner Damian Ford.

One of the best investments a homeowner can make is purchasing high-quality, long-lasting furniture, he said.

“In this disposable society, you can take great pride in investing in furniture that will last for not just years, but generations,” said Ford. “We have heirloom-quality pieces in classic styles; it’s good, solid furniture that we feel proud to sell.”

Other lower-end furnishings do not prove cost-effective in the long run, he added. “People buy a piece they use for three or four years, and then it starts to break down and look old,” he said. “They go out and finance something and have no payment until 2012 or whatever the offer is, but by the time the interest payments are due, the piece is ready to be replaced and ends up in the landfill.”

Hendrixson’s, which is proud to support domestic manufacturing, offers full furniture lines, including residential, commercial, children’s, home office and more.

The business’s featured line is Stickley; Hendrixson’s is one of the top 10 dealers in the world and has the largest Stickley gallery in the Delaware Valley, according to Ford.

With any purchase, the business extends complimentary design service to the customer.

“We don’t hold back on that free service,” said Ford. “We set them up with a plan to buy one piece at a time, one room at a time or an entire house; it can be anything in between there.”

Hendrixson’s also offers custom drapery work and window treatments.

“We present a mock-up drawing and even add colors to give a good visual of what the end result will be,” said Ford. “All of our designers are friendly, knowledgeable and well-trained to ensure a beautiful room.”

Janet Plaza, one of Hendrixson’s 10 designers, has two decades of experience and has been involved in award-winning projects, such as the John Roberts House at the Joseph Ambler Inn and the 2007 Doylestown Designer House.

“So many customers feel confused about product, fabrics and scale, and this sometimes paralyzes their decision-making process,” she said. “I feel I can best serve the client by providing an overall plan, allowing customers to purchase at their desired pace,” said Plaza.

In addition to its expertise, the family-owned and -operated business offers quality customer service and hands-on care.

“Most clients who visit Hendrixson’s Furniture desire a gracious home, well-furnished and comfortable,” said Ford. “In these challenging times, we find it most important to maintain an upbeat, positive attitude and provide the best quality products to our customers.”

The business has its own warehouse — where pieces can be refinished and reupholstered — and delivery service, which performs setup, assembly and removal.

As young boys, brothers Paul and Harry Hendrixson began working in upholstery with their father, said Ford. They would “turn springs” — a process where the fabric and padding would be pulled away and the springs would be turned in the other direction to replenish their strength.

In 1966, Hendrixson’s opened as a Hitchcock-specialty business, selling furniture with hand-stenciled designs on the back. It was the second largest dealer in the world at the time, said Ford.

Eventually, Paul and his wife, Virginia, took over and expanded the business. Their son, Jonathan, now is also an owner.

“Their philosophy always was to not buy anything they wouldn’t put in their own home,” he said. “The family appreciates great taste and good quality and that’s what has helped the business survive.”

Customers can visit showrooms at both Hendrixson’s locations, open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Right now, customers can receive 20 percent off any stock item on the floor by bringing in this article.
