Girlfriend getaways are fun, important stress relievers

Centuries ago, women spent more time together than they did with the rest of the family. During the Victorian Era, it was common to see women walk down the street holding hands as a sign of friendship.

Wives often saw more of their sisters, female neighbors and family than they did their own husbands. They spent time together sewing, talking, gossiping, or cooking and running the household.

In today’s busy world, it’s common that women let months go by without getting together with their aunts, moms and other influential mentors in their lives.

Gone are the days of girlhood when weekends were spent at a girlfriend’s house, hours on the phone giggling with a best friend or traveling in a gal pack. As most women get more involved in their careers, get married, start a family and have more obligations, they tend to let their friendships go to the bottom of the priority list.

But, it’s time to carve out a weekend, or at least an afternoon, to get together with friends and family of the female persuasion. It’s actually good for your health to get together with friends, as if you needed an excuse to call up your long-lost gal pals.

Researchers at the University of California found that friendships among women produce a calming effect from the “feel good” hormone oxytocin.

If you have the vacation time allotted from work and childcare is not a big problem, splurge on a multiple day trip with the girls. Whether it’s flying to an all-inclusive resort in the islands, which can be as affordable as $100 a day, or packing up and going skiing, the fall and winter months are ideal for a getaway.

American Airlines just announced a winter flight special with fares that are $25 to $100 from major U.S. cities.

Or, for something more local, check the fares of the New Jersey Transit system to New York City to check out a play on Broadway and have lunch on a Sunday afternoon. That’s a day-long trip that most children and husbands would be happy to miss, but would give you time to catch up and enjoy something a little different.

Go just before or just after the holidays to get better deals on flights and hotels, and de-stress from the family pressure of holidays.Sometimes, it’s fun to take a trip down memory lane and go for a road trip with the girls.

There are several ski slopes in the area that offer weekend or mid-week specials. Share a cabin with the girls to save money, and spend the days exercising and enjoying the first bit of snowy weather this fall and winter season. Go to www.skipa.com for a list of nearby ski resorts in Pennsylvania.

The iconic Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece, The Fallingwater House, is just a car trip away. The house has been called one of the architectural triumphs of the 20th Century because it sits on top of a waterfall. It will take just over four hours to get there. The house is preserved as it was when the Kaufmann family lived there. For more information, go to www.fallingwater.org.

ATLANTIC CITY - Denise Hill can't shake her memory of River Man. The acknowledged prostitute, who lives and works in this seaside gambling resort, was entertaining a client - a shoe fetishist - in November 2006 when the man blurted out a confession.
When Jennifer Clark went vegetarian, her mother was afraid she would die. Clark didn't die, or turn into a 98-pound weakling. Instead, she became so fit that she's running in her third Philadelphia Marathon tomorrow.
