Keep your hair stylish with Rizzieri Masters Salon

Backed by decades of industry experience and tradition, Rizzieri Masters Salon provides aspiring hair stylists a place to develop and gain hands-on experience.

The Masters Salon, a 14,500-square-foot location in Voorhees, acts as a “buffer” between the Rizzieri Institute cosmetology school and the business’s flagship salons, said manager Louis Ferrie.

“Every six months, we take the best 28 students from the school and train them with the idea that they’ll eventually go into the other salons,” he said. “It’s secondary, advanced training, which is why it’s called ‘master.’”

Students in the 24-week program spend time learning through live workshops, demonstrations and instruction, then work “behind the chair,” he said.

“A lot of times when you’re new and working as an assistant, you’re just asked to shampoo hair,” said Ferrie. “This is a really fun environment with aggressive and fast-paced training you wouldn’t normally get. It keeps you fresh and inspired.”

Being a part of this competitive industry is rewarding, said Ferrie, who worked in investment banking before joining the Rizzieri team.

“Bad times or good times, people always need a haircut,” he said. “It’s about making people feel happy; who doesn’t like to feel like they’re looking good?”

The facility offers all types of hair services, including highlighting, coloring and cuts for women, men and children. Makeup services also are available.

Clients can come to the Masters Salon for quality service at a reduced price, he added.

“It’s a price point between the school and the salons,” the manager explained. “Some of the more senior people can be high priced and the schools are cost effective; this is right in the middle.”

The Rizzieri Institute, established in 1928, was the first cosmetology school of its kind in New Jersey. The business ultimately launched award-winning salons in Marlton and Washington Township and a day spa in Washington Township.

Frank Rizzieri, the third-generation owner of the business, is heavily involved with the students’ training, said Ferrie.

A well-known professional in the industry, Rizzieri was named North American Hair Stylist of the Year in 1989, 1990 and 1993.

Rizzieri’s styles have appeared on the covers and in articles of several national magazines. He also developed an innovative line of styling tools called Rsession with fellow celebrity stylist and business partner Kevin Ryan.

Though appointments are preferred at the Masters Salon, walk-ins are seen, said Ferrie. Rizzieri also holds open model calls.

The Masters Salon, which opened in April, is open Tuesday through Friday from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The facility is closed Sunday and Monday.

Enrollment takes place five to six times per year, said Ferrie.
